Abstract

1376695 Coating method FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 20 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 58909/72 Headings B2E and B2L A method for electrostatically applying a powder coating material to an object comprises (a) forming a pressurised mixture of gas and coating material, (b) applying an electrical potential difference between the object and an electrode, (c) guiding said pressurised mixture past the electrode to charge the particles, (d) expanding the pressurised mixture containing the charged particles, (e) confining the expanded mixture to a closed volume bounded in part by the object to be coated and drawing surplus expanded mixture from the closed volume bounded in part by the said object back towards a powder elector whereby a portion of the charged particles is electrostatically attracted to the object to form a coating thereon. In an apparatus described an electrostatic spray gun and a shroud assembly 14 are shown positioned adjacent an object 16 such as a sheet metal panel. The gun has a body portion 18 and a central bore 20. A powder inlet 22 is located at one end and a hose 24 connected to it. At the other end of the bore is an electrode 26 connected to a high voltage sprend 38. The terminal 48 of the source of electrical energy is connected to the object 16. The terminal 48 and the object may be electrically grounded. The spray gun has a nozzle portion 50 having an adjustment cone 52. The shroud assembly comprises an inner shroud 54 and an outer shroud 56 and a plurality of spaces therebetween to form a chamber 16. The inner shroud surrounds the nozzle and extends beyond it in the direction of the object as does the outer shroud. The inner shroud has an opening 62 and the outer shroud an opening 66. The opening 66 is closer to the object than the opening 62. The outer shroud 56 is provided with an exhaust port 68 communicating with the chamber 60 and a conduit 70 is attached to exhaust port 68 and is connected at 72 to a source of sub-atmospheric pressure and to a powder collector. A mixture of compressed or pressurised air or other gas enters the central bore 20 through holes 24 when activated by a trigger switch 74. The pressurised mixture is guided past electrode 26 and discharged into the interior of the inner shroud through the adjustable nozzle 50. The inner shroud becomes filled with an expanded cloud of air and powder mixture and a coating of charged powder is formed on the object 16 and used air and powder mixture flows out into the chamber 60 along a flow path located in the region between the periphery 62 of the inner shroud opening and the object 16. The method is used to coat vehicle bodies.
