Abstract

1348352 Band brakes TRIST DRAPER Ltd 8 Feb 1972 5840/72 Heading F2E A brake band for a band brake, e.g. in an automatic transmission system for a motor vehicle has an end fitting at each end for transmitting or reacting against tensioning stresses in the band, the band having out-turned ends and the end fittings being secured to the band in a position so that they abut against the outturned ends. As shown, a brake band of flexible steel strip 1, Fig. 1, with a lining 2 of friction material, has end fittings 3 spot-welded to its ends, the end fittings being intended to co-operate with actuating elements for tightening the brake around a drum in the motor-vehicle automatic transmission system. Shear stress which would be applied to the welds by the tangential tightening force is transmitted to the band itself, according to the invention, by turning the ends of the bands outwardly at 1a, Fig. 1, around the end fittings. Preferably the corner of the fitting 3 located adjacent the angle between the body of the band and the out-turned end 1a is chamfered to ensure solid engagement between the fitting and end 1a. In Fig. 3 three brake band portions 11 to 13 are provided. Each of the outer portions 11 or 13 has an end fitting 14, for receiving the brake-actuating thrust in a direction from left to right, and an upturned end 11a or 13a. A common bridge-piece fitting 15 is spot-welded to the other ends of the portions 11, 13, and also to the other end of the middle portion 12. Brake-actuating thrust is applied to the end fitting 14 of portion 12 in a right-to-left direction and is taken by the portion at upturned end 12a. The out-turned end may be continued through a further right angle to extend back over the band. The band may be of the so-called rigid, instead of flexible, type.
