Abstract

1323425 Coated sheet materials DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 3 Nov 1970 [16 Dec 1969] 61144/69 Heading B2E A sheet having a pattern which extends into the thickness of the sheet is produced by forming a layer of fragments of a resinous material, applying without further treatment of the layer to selected areas of the surface of the layer smaller particles of a patterning material, and heating and/or pressing the resulting composite layer to form a coherent patterned sheet material. The particles of patterning material may be applied using a stencil, and may be caused to penetrate into the layer by vibration and/or a vacuum. Where a vacuum is to be used the layer of fragments may be formed of a porous substrate, e.g. a paper backing sheet which may form part of the final product or may be removable. Preferably the fragments are of a thermoplastic resinous material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride copolymers with vinyl acetate, propylene or vinyl ether. The patterning particles may be of different colour to the fragments and are preferably of a thermoplastic composition similar to those of the larger fragments. The patterning particles may be applied in the form of a dust cloud. Two or more differently coloured types of smaller particles may be used.
