Abstract
1310260 Low molecular weight polyethylenes BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 Aug 1970 [9 Aug 1969] 38179/70 Heading C3P Low molecular weight waxy polyethylene is produced continuously by melting high molecular weight polyethylene by heating with vigorous stirring, extruding the melt into a heated tube, thermally degrading the polyethylene in the tube and cooling the polyethylene after degradation wherein (a) the starting polyethylene has a molecular weight of 80,000 to 200,000 by light scattering, (b) the solid polyethylene melts within 1 to 6 minutes, (c) the heat applied is such that the polyethylene has a temperature of 350‹ to 500‹ C. on extrusion, (d) the polyethylene is extruded into the heated tube against a pressure of 1 to 20 atmospheres gauge, (e) the polyethylene in the tube is thermally degraded at 350‹ to 500‹ C. for 10 to 120 minutes and (f) the waxy degraded polyethylene is cooled to below 250‹ C. in 3 to 5 minutes. The products may be used to coat granular materials and in the manufacture of pastes and dispersions.
