Abstract
1308219 Counter ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd 1 Sept 1971 [7 Oct 1970] 47672/70 Heading G4D A counter has a units wheel 10 and a tens wheel 11 each having projections 14 to enable manual setting, an integral ratchet wheel 15 on one side and two cam surfaces 16, 17 on the other side. Each wheel is operated by an electromagnet 28 attracting a plate 30 to rotate a drive assembly 20 about a shaft 19. Each drive assembly has an upper arm carrying a pin resting on cam surface 16 and carries pawls 24, 25, pivoted on a rod 22 coupling the two assemblies together. When the electromagnet is not actuated the pawls are spaced from the ratchet. In operation the wheels are preset to a desired number and are counted down. Since the pawl is removed from the ratchet the wheels can be rotated in either direction. On actuation of the electromagnet the ratchet is rotated and a spring loaded pawl provides positive presetting and a shoulder 38 on each drive member 21 abuts projections 14 to prevent overrunning of the counter. The pawl of the tens counter is driven on to a cam surface 16 of the units wheels which normally maintains it free of the ratchet wheel except when a portion 161 allows drive once per revolution. A cam surface 17 is also provided having a recess situated opposite pin 23 when the digit wheel displays zero. This allows additional movement of assembly 20 when both wheels are reset to zero to operate a microswitch 33.
