Abstract
1297183 Hypodermic needle assemblies JOHNSON & JOHNSON 12 June 1970 [12 June 1969] 28594/70 Heading A5R A hypodermic needle assembly comprises a needle 8, Fig. 7, on a hub 10 and has a sheath 1 normally extending from adjacent a piercing end of the needle to the hub 10, the sheath being unattached to the hub and having a constricted portion normally sealing against the needle adjacent said piercing end, and the sheath being compressible with distortion along the needle after a self-sealing closed end of the sheath has been pierced by the needle and being resiliently self-returnable to its original position. The sheath is slidably sealed onto the needle by means of one or more internally projecting rings 5, Fig. 10, or by constricting the internal diameter over a section extending from the closed end, Fig. 13 (not shown). The sheath may have a rounded or flat closed end and the internal and external walls may diverge outwardly towards the hub 10. The sheath may be made of natural rubber, rubber compositions or rubber-like synthetic elastomers. The valve-forming sheath may be used on a double-ended needle 8, Fig. 6, with a hub intermediate its ends, the needle and sheath being stored in a container (22), Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) prior to screwing of hub 10 into the base of a hollow plastics material cylinder 11 so that one end of the needle with the sheath thereon is contained in the, cylinder. The other end of the needle may be inserted into a blood vessel and a glass vacuum tube, with a pierceable self-sealing stopper 16, introduced into cylinder 11 so that the sheath deforms as said one end of the needle 8 pierces therethrough and through stopper 16 allowing collection of a blood sample in tube 14. On removal of the tube 14 the sheath 2 ressumes its sealing position around the needle due to its resiliency. The closed end 3 of the sheath may be coated with liquid silicone and/or provided with raised projections to prevent adhesion to the stopper 16. The sheath 1 may also be used on the needles of ordinary hypodermic syringes.
