Abstract

1291583 Air foil nozzles OVERLY Inc 15 Oct 1969 [21 April 1969] 50761/69 Heading F4G [Also in Division B8] An air-foil nozzle 1 for cleaning, drying, or stabilizing a web 6 by the discharge of gas from the nozzle towards the surface of the web without physical contact between the nozzle and the surface, comprises a plenum chamber 26 having a gas delivery slot 4 formed between a curved air-foil 2 and an air-foil member 24 and extending across the web 6, the discharged gas following the curvature of the foil 2 to provide a cushion of flowing gas between the foil and the surface, and the velocity of the discharge gas reducing the static pressure of the gas adjacent the foil to a pressure lower than ambient, so that the nozzle and surface are forced together but held apart by the gas cushion. A second gas delivery slot 28 is provided to assist the flow of gases between the air-foil and surface. Corrugations 27 impart turbulence to the flow of gases. Nozzles 1 may be used on both sides of the web 6. The air-foil 2 may be of part-circular or part elliptical section, or comprise a pipe.
