Abstract
1281348 Securing coils for dynamo-electric machines ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 31 Oct 1969 [12 Nov 1968] 53615/68 Heading H2A A cylindrical support 12 for the rotor end windings 34 in a dynamo-electric machine is formed at least partly of carbon fibre reinforced plastics material. The end windings support may include two cylinders 11, 12, and in one embodiment the outer cylinder 12 comprises plastics material reinforced with carbon fibres wound circumferentially, and the inner cylinder 11 comprises either plastics material reinforced with carbon or glass fibres extending parallel to the axis, or non-magnetic steel. In another embodiment both cylinders comprise helically wound carbon fibres with their helixes in opposite senses. Alternatively there may be a single cylinder with the fibres wound in a double helix. To form the fibre-reinforced cylinders fibres may be wound and subsequently impregnated with resin, or sheets of partially-cured fibrereinforced resin may be pressed to the desired shape and then fully cured. The cylinders 11, 12 are a press fit on an annular surface 32 and insulation 36 is interposed between the inner cylinder 11 and the end windings 34. To allow movement of the end windings relative to the support, the cylinder 11 may be lined with P.T.F.E. or with alternate layers of rubber and metal (Fig. 2, not shown). The supporting arrangement includes a glass or carbon fibre reinforced plastics end cover 13 which may be formed integrally with the cylinder 12 and have a conical or dome shape.
