Abstract

1,271,785. Rotary moulding. H. GIEHLER. 29 July, 1970 [3 April, 1970], No. 36671/70. Heading B5A. In a method of rotationally moulding a synthetic thermoplastic material comprising a cellulose derivative and a softener, the mould is rotated about mutually inclined axes and the material therein is heated; during the heating a negative pressure is produced in the mould and during the subsequent cooling phase an increase of pressure is produced by the introduction of an inert gas. An excess of softener over that required to produce the desired properties in the moulded article is added to the cellulose derivative and such excess is distilled from the mould during the heating phase. The mould may comprise hollow walled halves 1a, 1b for the passage therethrough of heated oil interconnected by flanges 3a, 3b; a pipe 6 connects the mould cavity with a source of negative pressure via a rotary joint 7. The space between the flanges is connected to the same negative pressure source by a tube 10 leading from an annular groove 9 and connected to a negative pressure storer 11 connecting via a non-return valve 13 and a softener separator 14 with the pipe 6. The flanges are embraced by a sealing ring 5.
