Novel compounds of the general Formula I wherein R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different are alkyl radicals, A is an alkylene radical and X is free or esterified carboxylic acid or methylol, may be prepared by condensing a diphenyl ethane derivative II with a monohaloaliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide to give I where X is free carboxylic acid and optionally esterifying the product and/or optionally reducing the free acid or the ester. The compounds have oestrogenic and antioestrogenic properties.
