Abstract

1,266,580. Glass fibre manufacture. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT GOBAIN. 29 Aug., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 43152/69. Heading C1M. Glass fibres are produced by feeding molten glass on to the horizontal surface of a disc 1 rotating about a vertical axis, causing the glass to flow over an outer part of the disc having apertures 7 therein, the apertured surface being horizontal or inclined at an acute angle to the horizontal, causing the molten glass to flow downwardly through the apertures 7 and attenuating the resulting filaments by a current of gas. A stream of glass 12 falls into an annular channel 6 in the disc 1 from where it is spread out centrifugally and propelled through apertures 7 and attenuated by gas from an annular burner 8. The removal of the fibres is assisted by a blower 14 and binder material sprayed on to the fibres from atomizers 18. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the molten glass falls into a centrally located reservoir and the glass temperature is maintained by a burner which annularly surrounds the glass stream and is adjustable in height. In a third embodiment (Fig. 4) the glass is propelled through the apertures 36 by the action of centrifugal force alone and this necessitates the inclination of the axis of each aperture at an angle of from 50 to 80 degrees to the normal of the top surface of the disc 37. A radiant heater is located above the apertures to maintain the glass at a correct temperature. The apertures may be arranged in rows, each row being inclined to the disc axis. Each aperture may be provided with square or triangular section channels in its walls.
