Fires of synthetic plastics and other materials which liberate harmful gases or vapours on reaction with water alone are quenched by including in the fire extinguishing water supply approximately 1 % by wt. of at least one additive capable of binding or neutralising said gases or vapours to a harmless product. For example, particular materials are treated as follows:-P.T.F.E. with calcium acetate as additive; polyamides and urea resins with aluminium sulphate; P.V.C., chlorinated rubber, or cellulose nitrate with an alkali metal carbonate, borate or phosphate. An additive mixture is used if more than one harmful product is liberated; e.g. the mixture Na 2 HPO 4 / NaH 2 PO 4 .
