Abstract
1,216,306. Plate heat exchangers. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 14780/67. Heading F4S. In a cross-flow plate heat-exchanger comprising a plurality of plates 1 spaced apart by bars 2 to define first and second series of fluid passages 3 and 4 respectively each containing corrugated secondary heat exchange members 9, thermal stresses in the heat-exchanger are reduced by incorporating means progressively either to increase or decrease the fluid flow through the outermost passages in one series relative to the fluid flow through the remaining intermediate passages in the same series. As shown in Fig. 1 a reduced fluid flow is achieved by the inclusion, adjacent the inlet flow of fluid to the outermost passages, of spacer bars 5 and 7 having holes 6 and 8 of different crosssection. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 2, the space bars 5, 7 are replaced by modified corrugated plate members 10, 11 which serve the same purpose. The member 10 has staggered dimples 12 over its surface and the member 11 has its corrugations 13 arranged in a zigzag manner. In an alternative form of the invention either the spacer bars 5, 7 (Fig. 5, not shown), or the corrugated members 9, 10, are arranged in the intermediate fluid passages of one series to reduce the fluid flow therethrough relative to the outermost passages of the same series.
