A relief valve comprising a valve closure member 13 positioned downstream of a port (not shown) and having a recess in the front face of the member 13, and an elastomeric sealing element 16, is characterized in that the member 13 is formed with a plurality of venting passages 25, 26 distributed in correspondence with the thickness of the sealing element, leading from, the recess to the atmospheric or downstream side of the valve so that any fluid held within or about the sealing element 16 can escape through the venting passages 25, 26 without disturbing the sealing element in its recess.
