Patterned flock-coated sheet material having a relief pattern on its surface is produced by providing a base comprising a sheet of rubber or synthetic resin composition having adhesively applied thereto a perforated sheet material which provides the base with depressions and/or outstanding portions corresponding to the desired surface pattern, the base having an adhesive coating over the depressions and/or outstanding portions, and depositing flock onto the adhesive coating. The perforated sheet material may be an open mesh sheet material, which Imay have been flocked prior to being laid onto the Ibase sheet in which case the subsequently applied flock adheres to the adhesive in the open areas of the flocked mesh. The fibres applied may differ in colour and/or length from those deposited on the mesh to obtain a striking patterned effect. The open mesh sheet material may be an open-weave fabric of synthetic fibre, such as a scrim fabric, and may be of nylon or rayon. The base sheet may be of foam rubber or foam synthetic resin composition, e.g. polyurethane, or a laminate of the rubber or synthetic resin composition with a hessian, textile and/or paper sheet. The adhesive may 'be applied to the base by means of a spreading roller in the form of a rod having a series of substantially uniform ridges running around its surface of having a single surface ridge in the form of a helix, by a knife or a smooth roller. The flock, e.g. nylon flock, may 'be applied electrostatically. The flocked material are useful as floor-coverings, upholstery, curtains, and may be vacuum-moulded into a shaped car carpet.
