[Also in Divisions D2 and H1] A strip or strips of a compound paper having at least one layer of a first component paper having a density not exceeding 0-7 g./c.c., and at least one layer of a second component paper having an impermeability of not less than 10<SP>7</SP> Emanueli units is helically wound on to a cable, the pitch of the helix being greater than the width of the strip, the cable being covered by multiple overlapping layers of the strip. The covering may be impregnated with mineral and/or synthetic oils. If a two componentlayer paper is used, then the high-impermeability layer is preferably towards the cable.
