Abstract
1,184,073. Measuring mass flow electrically. FLOUR MILLING & BAKING RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 14, 1968 [July 14, 1967; March 15, 1968], Nos. 32576/67 and 12682/68. Heading G1N. Means for detecting or measuring the flow of disperse, particulate material in a conduit comprises a grid member mounted transversely in the conduit, a Piezo-electric transducer developing an electrical signal in response to vibration of the grid produced by impact thereon of the flowing material and circuit means responsive to the signal so as to provide an indication related to the flow. Fig. 1 shows a tubular conduit 1 within which a particulate material is lifted upwards as a suspension in air and flows through apertures in grid member 3. Resilient plugs 4, 5 are inserted in the conduit wall to support the grid. A vibrationresponsive device produces an electrical output related to the vibration of wire 6 connecting it to the grid. This output may be rectified and displayed as a measure of instantaneous mass flow or integrating and/or summing circuits used to measure mean or total mass flow. Other grid geometrics for use with one or a plurality of transducers are described with reference to Figs. 3-5 (not shown).
