Abstract
1,178,340. Olefin-acrylate copolymers. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. 19 Nov., 1968 No. 54904/68. Headings C3G and C3P. An olefin-acrylate copolymer is prepared by a process comprising the sequential steps of (a) forming a solid, crystalline polymer which is polypropylene, polyethylene or a random or block copolymer of propylene with less than 50% by weight of ethylene, (b) adding thereto an acrylic monomer and an alkyl lithium catalyst and (c) copolymerizing the acrylic monomer on to the solid, crystalline polymer. The acrylic monomer is of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a methyl group and R<SP>2</SP> is an alkyl radical, an alkyl amino substituted alkyl radical or an alkoxy substituted alkyl radical. Examples are given in which polypropylene is produced in bulk or in a hydrocarbon diluent medium using a TiCl 3 /AlEt 2 Cl catalyst system and t-butyl acrylate or w-butyl acrylate is copolymerized with the resulting polypropylene in a hydrocarbon diluent using n-butyl lithium as catalyst.
