Abstract
1,175,055. Contact process; sulphuric acid. ELECTRIC REDUCTION CO. OF CANADA Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 53985/65. Heading C1A. Sulphuric acid is prepared by reacting sulphur dioxide with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst to form sulphur trioxide, cooling the partially reacted gases in the presence of water vapour to yield sulphuric acid, and reacting the residual gases in the presence of a catalyst to form more sulphur trioxide. Preferably, the gases are passed alternately through a plurality of catalyst zones and condensers and the gas leaving the final catalyst zone is scrubbed with sulphuric acid. The water vapour may be added before or after the catalyst stage, and is preferably in a concentration such that oleum is produced in all stages but the last where more water is used to give complete absorption. Cooling is carried out either by evaporation of water at elevated pressures, or by contact with heat exchange surfaces at successively lower temperatures, each below the dew point of the gas, but above the temperature at which the gas spontaneously nucleates to form a mist. The temperature in the catalyst zone.is preferably between 380‹ and 620‹ C., and the reactor is preferably made of a ceramic material such as porcelain, metals coated with resistant materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene or silicon-iron or nickel alloys.
