1,173,540. Benzodiazepine derivatives. BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM G.m.b.H. 25 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55844/68. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of the general Formula I (R 1 =H, C 1-4 alkyl or benzyl; R 2 = C 1-4 alkyl, methoxy-(C 1-3 alkyl), ethoxy-(C 1-3 alkyl), allyl or benzyl optionally substituted by a halogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group; R 3 =H, halogen, methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy; R 4 =H, halogen, OH, NO 2 , amino, CF 3 , CN, methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy; R 5 =H, halogen, CF 3 , methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy; R 6 = H, halogen, methyl or ethyl) are prepared by (a) cyclizing a reactive derivative of an acid of the Formula II (b) reacting an acid of the above formula with a carboxylic acid or anhydride, or (c) heating a compound of the Formula III (X= halogen) with an alkali metal alcoholate. The preparation of starting materials of Formlµ II and III and of 2-phenylamino-4- chloro-N-ethylbenzamide is described. The compounds of Formula I are psychosedatives and anticonvulsants, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier or excipient.
