Abstract
1,168,484. Organolithium compounds; amine complexes; carboxylic acids. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 18 Oct., 1966 [1 Nov., 1965; 24 June, 1966], No. 46591/66. Headings C2C and C2J. Organolithium compounds are prepared by reacting: (a) a C 1 -C 15 organolithium compound; (b) an organic amine, phosphine sulphide, halide, an ether, ferrocene or a cyclopropyllic compound (as defined below) and (c) a chelating bifunctional Lewis base having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are C 1 -C 3 alkyl radicals and X is a C 4 -C 7 cycloalkylene or a C 1 -C 4 alkylene radical having 0 to 4 monovalent hydrocarbon radicals of 1 to 20 carbon atoms as substituents, the organo portion of (a) being such as to form a weaker protonic acid than (b), and (b) being a stronger protonio acid than (b). The product is the compound (b) metallated, and chelated by the base (c). The C 1 -C 15 organolithium compound may be alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, e.g. methyllithium, butyllithium, cyclooctyllithium, dodecyllithium, 2-methylbutyllithium, phenyllithium, benzyllithium, sec.-butyllithium, allyllithium or vinyllithium. The cyclopropyllic compounds which may be used have the formula where R is hydrogen or C 1 -C 10 alkyl or cycloalkyl, there being at least 4 hydrogen atoms on the cyclopropane ring. Cyclopropane is preferred. Many examples of suitable chelating bases are given, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl. 1,2- ethanediamine (TMEDA) being preferred. The reaction may be carried out in a hydrocarbon diluent or in an excess of the compound being metallated, if liquid. The molar ratio of organolithium compound to chelating base may be 100:1 to 1:10 and the chelating base may be removed from the product by treatment with lithium salts or Lewis acids. Examples describe the reaction of butyl lithium with (1) ferrocene and (2) cyclopropane in the presence of TMEDA yielding complexes of the latter with Li ferrocene and Li cyclopropane respectively, and (3) the reactions of phenyl lithium with pyridine and beta-picoline using TMEDA as base. The products of (1), (2) and (3) are carbonated, yielding ferrocene, cyclopropane, pyridine and picoline carboxylic acids. Data is given comparing the metallation of benzene by butyl lithium in the presence of various di-tertiary amines. It is stated that organolithium compounds may also be prepared by reacting an organic chloride, e.g. phenyl chloride, with Na metal and LiCl in the presence of the chelating base or by reacting an organo halide, e.g. vinyl or phenyl chloride with Li alone or with Na, in the presence of the base, an inert hydrocarbon diluent being present in both cases.
