Abstract

1,160,223. Thermographic transfer processes. GEVAERT-AGFA N. V. June 22, 1966 [June 22, 1965], No.26468/65. Heading G2C. A thermographic transfer process i.e. which a heat-sensitive transfer sheet is imagewise heated to remove or convert some of the heatsensitive material therein and then contacting with a receptor sheet containing a reactant which reacts with the heat-sensitive material and transferring the remaining reactant by means of heat or a liquid produce a colour charge on the receptor sheet. The transfer sheet preferably contains light-absorbing, sheet-generating substances so that on imagewise flash-exposure to visible light the sheet becomes heated imagewise. Specified heat-sensitive material with their reactants are: (a) compounds splitting off sulphur e.g. dithioexamide, thioacetamide and p-phenylenedithiourea (with organic salts of copper, silver, lead or nickel) (b) organic acid (with pH indicators), (c) benzoylperoxide or tetrachloroquinone (with organic compounds which change colour on oxidation (d) azo couplers (with diazomium salts); (e) phenyl-pyrazolidinones (with silver and gold salts, triazdium and tetrazolium compounds (f) 8-hydroxy- 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroquinoline or phenols and naptholm), (with organic salts of iron, copper, silver or cobalt; (g) N, N-dimethylbenzamide or N-methylacetamide (with 5-bromo-aminothiazoles; (h) nitroso compounds (with aromatic hydroxy corresponds; (i) triazenes (with azo couplers); (j) aromatic amines and hydroxyamines (with silver, mercury or cadmium salts, nitroso or diazonium compounds) (k) aromatic nitro compounds (with iron salts, and (m) compounds which release amines on heating (with diazonium salt and a coupler or pH indicators). In the examples, the heat, sensitive material and carbon black or silver are dispersed in a binder and applied to a support. The transfer material is either directly or reflex flash-exposed using a xenon gas discharge lamp to evaporate the heat-sensitive material in the areas corresponding to the background of the original. The transfer material is contacted with the receptor sheet containing the reactant and heated to produce a positive coloured image on the receptor sheet. Alternatively the exposed transfer material may be moistened with water and contacted with a receptor sheet to produce a coloured image on the receptor sheet.
