Abstract

1,112,935. Arc blow-torches. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 15 Sept., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 40812/65. Heading H5H. A plasma arc device has its cathode 22 comprised in part by a plurality of thoriated tungsten rods 26 touching one another at their ends and each having an area (27, Fig. 2) treated to concentrate emission. The cathode also includes a tube 23 for material to be treated and a cooling jacket 28, 29 located in a shaft 12 rotatably mounted in a bearing block 11. Shaft 12 carries a drive pulley 10 and a flange 13, the latter carrying a cooled cylindrical copper arc enclosure 16 for rotation therewith. The anode assembly comprises a cooled copper starting anode 31 which collects the treated material and a cooled running anode 33 adjustably secured thereto and provided with an outlet 58. Gas introduced through tube 23 or ducts 56 and 57 to mix with the material leaves through outlet 58. In a modification (Figs. 6a, 6b), the arc enclosure comprises hollow segments interconnected for coolant circulation. The cathode 22 is mounted for movement towards and away from the anode assembly to strike the arc, carbon brushes 30, switch 39 and resistor 40 completing the circuit to the supply 38. Once the arc has transferred from anode 31 to anode 33, switch 39 is opene d.Rotation of enclosure 16 causes the arc to expand.
