Abstract

1,108,900. Hypodermic syringes. W. A. SHIELDS. 15 Nov., 1966 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 51060/66. Heading A5R. A disposable syringe includes a vial 6 having a filler opening 20 with a beaded mouth 15, a diaphragm 19 closing the filler opening and held to the vial by a cap 21 crimped over the beading, the diaphragm having an annular peripheral portion 16, a centre portion 19, and an intermediate annular portion 17 of less thickness than the peripheral portion, the cap 21 having inner surfaces abutting the annular portions of the diaphragm against the mouth of the vial. As shown, the cap 21 is of metal and carries a double-ended needle 25 and the vial forming the barrel of the syringe is of transparent glass and includes a rubber plunger (8) screw-connected to a plunger rod (11). The resilient diaphragm is of rubber and, when the plunger (8) is moved to expel medicament from the syringe, the centre portion 19 of the diaphragm is flexed against the needle 25 so that it is punctured. A needle cover (30) may be fitted over the cap 21.
