[Also in Division F3] In a marine seismic exploration system in which seismic waves are generated by detonating an explosive charge and are recorded after reflection or refraction at underwater rock strata, oscillations of the combustion gas bubble (which would give rise to undesirable secondary pressure wave pulses) are reduced by using a charge having a length to maximum crosssectional dimension ratio exceeding 5: 1. In various embodiments the charge comprises a solid explosive mixture (specified) in a rigid canister or a polyethylene tube, and may comprise a number of grouped small charges arranged to be fired simultaneously.
