Abstract

1,080,983. Automatic circuit-breakers; switchgear structures. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 25, 1965 [Aug. 25, 1964], No. 34843/64. Heading H2B. Circuit-breaker actuating mechanism includes a rotatable shaft 29, springs 23 to load the shaft in one sense of rotation, a first latch 43 to hold the shaft against rotation, interconnecting means 24, 36, 35, 26 and 27 between the shaft and the movable contact(s) of the circuit-breaker and arranged so that on release of the latch, rotation of the shaft causes the interconnecting means to move the movable contact from the open position to the closed position and disengage when the movable contact has substantially reached the closed position where a further latch, Fig. 3 (not shown), holds the contact member. The shaft 29 may be turned by a lever acting through ratchet - and - pawl mechanism, Fig. 4 (not shown), to tension the springs 23 and is then held by the latch 43 engaging a roller 41 on a cam 24. When a coil 49 is energized, a latch member 45 is turned to release the latch 43 which slides off the roller 41 so that the springs, connected to a pivot 40 on the cam, turn the shaft 29 and the cam 24. The cam acts on a roller 36 to turn the levers 35, 26, 27 to close the circuit-breaker, the operating face 37 of the cam moving past the roller 36 just before the circuit-breaker is fully closed. In the closed position a roller (not shown) carried by the lever 26 is engaged by electromagnetically released latching mechanism to retain the circuit breaker closed against the bias of opening springs, Fig. 7 (not shown). To prevent the release of the latch 43 when the circuit-breaker is already closed, a telescopic spring link 53, 54 biases a pivoted lever 52 against the latch member 45. When the shaft 29 is turned to tension the springs 23, the roller 41 engages an arm 57 of a reset lever 55 and turns the lever so that a pin 59 on the lever pushes the latch 43 into position to reengage the roller.
