Abstract

[Also in Division H3] A device for the automatic dipping or dimming of vehicle headlights in response to the light from an approaching vehicle includes a photo-electric cell controlling a relay performing the required operation through a transistor amplifier. The amplifier is a two stage direct coupled one with positive interstage feedback so as to enable low power handling transistors to be used. In the absence of an approaching vehicle the photo-cell resistance is high, the collector current of TR1 low, and TR2 allows the relay to be energized. As illumination of the cell increases the collector current of TR1 increases and the base of TR2 becomes less negative until a point is reached when, due to feedback, TR2 is rapidly switched off.
