Abstract

The dyeability and moisture regain of polypropylene fibres are improved by passing the newly spun fibres while still in the molten state through an oxygen-containing gas to form hydroperoxide or peroxide groups thereon, stretching the fibres and then graft polymerizing them in an oxygen-free atmosphere with a free radical polymerizable monomer, e.g. acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylic or methacrylic acid vinyl pyridine and vinyl pyrrolidone. The examples describe blowing oxygen at 75 DEG C. on to molten polypropylene fibres, stretching the fibres and then immersing them in: (1) methyl methacrylate, (2) aqueous acrylic acid and (3) 2-vinyl-pyridine vapour diluted with steam. The resulting fibres are dyeable with (1) disperse dyes, (2) basic dyes and (3) acid dyes.
