Abstract

1,016,301. Vehicle and like signal lamps. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. July 5, 1963 [July 24, 1962], No. 26822/63. Heading F4R. A signal lamp especially for vehicle turning signals comprises a light source, means for forming a secondary light source image of the source in a selected colour and at a point in front of the source, a clear lens spaced from the source-image for projecting a beam of signal rays and a mask between the lens and the source having an opening at the point of formation of the source-image, the mask providing a background of different colour or appearance when the light source is turned off. In the form shown, a source 12 is mounted at one focus F of an ellipsoidal reflector 18, a mask 20 having an aperture 50 at the second focus F<SP>1</SP> of the reflector is mounted in front of the source and a lens 16 is mounted in front of the mask. The mask may consist of an inner spheroidal part 34 connected by a radial part 38 to an outer spheroidal part 36, light-reflecting surfaces being provided on the inner side and lightreflecting, dispersing or absorbing surfaces on the outer. The aperture 50 is closed by a coloured translucent button. The lens 16 has an annular rim, a cylindrical body portion 52 and a front portion 60 which may be smooth or provided with focusing elements on the outer surface and a series of dioptric and catadioptric rings 62, 64 on the inner surface. In modifications, the mask may be plane, the envelope of the lamp or the surface of the reflector may be coloured, the button then being then omitted or colourless and in this case, a small opaque disc may be provided at the centre of the lens to stop direct, uncoloured light.
