Abstract

Phloroglucinol is made by hydrolysing 1:3:5 triamino-benzene obtained by the reduction of 5-nitro-1:3 diamino-benzene. Hydrolysis is effected in known manner with an aqueous mineral acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, at a temperature of 60 DEG to 120 DEG C. Reduction reaction may be effected with hydrogen under pressure in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. platinum, palladium or nickel; or by using base metals, e.g. tin, zinc, aluminium or iron in the presence of a mineral acid or a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic acid or formic acid. Isolation of the 1:3:5 triamino-benzene as a solid trihydrochloride from the reduction mixture before hydrolysis is carried out produces phloroglucinol of high purity. Two examples are given of the reduction of 5-nitro-1:3-diamino-benzene, one with hydrogen in the presence of nickel and the other with iron powder and 32% hydrochloric acid.
