Abstract

1,003,712. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 28, 1961 [Dec. 31, 1960], No. 46382/61. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre has, in each bead region, a flipper strip 8 wound round the bead wire core 7, the strip 8 comprising a rubber compound having embedded therein overlapping closely adjacent lengths of inextensible metal filaments generally shorter than the width of the strip and disposed either in random distribution or orientated by calendering to provide a " grain " effect. The strip 8 may be profiled to serve as an apex strip tapering from the bead core into the tyre sidewall, or as shown, may be wrapped around a separate tapered rubber apex strip 9 surmounting the core 7. In an alternative construction as shown in Fig. 3, the flipper strips may comprise the ends 14, 15 of a bead to bead carcase-reinforcing layer 16 of the filament reinforced rubber, the ends being wrapped around the bead cores 12, 13. The metal filament may be from a quarter, to three inches in length and of a diameter of from 0.002 to 0.01 inches.
