Abstract

Fuel electrode for the anodic oxidn. of HCHO in electrochemical fuel cells contains two catalysts, (I) catalysing oxidn. to HCOOH and (II) oxidn. of HCCOH to CO2. The pref. catalysts are: (I) carbide, nitride, silicide, and/or boride of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co and/or Ni, esp. WC; and (II) a metal chelate, esp. the Co complex (CoTAA) of 5,14-dihydro-dibenzo (5,9,14,18)-tetraaza (14)-annulene. Almost quantitive oxidn. of HCHO to CO2 via HCOOH is achieved.
