Abstract

A granular, carbon-contg. starting material is admixed with a solid, heat-curable phenoplast binder, compressed in a pressure mould, heated under press. at the m.pt. of the binder and cured at elevated temps. The shaped body is then brought to the carbonisation temp. of the binder in a non-oxidising atmos. The starting material is suitably degassed or calcined coke, natural or electrographite and may contain ceramic or metallic powder additives. The binder is a phenol resin of the Resol and/or Novolak type and may have curing agent added. The shaped bodies find use as long lasting moulds for iron bodies.
