Abstract

A method of separating the para-isomer from a feed mixture comprising at least two alcohol-substituted monocyclic aromatic isomers, including the para- isomer, said isomers having 8 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule, a process comprising (i) contacting said mixture, under adsorption conditions, with an adsorbent prepared by means of the operations of: (a) contacting a base material comprising zeolite Y with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, under initial conditions ion exchange, to effect the addition of sodium cations to said base material; (b) treating the base material exchanged with sodium, under second ion exchange conditions, to effect essentially complete exchange (as defined herein) of sodium cations with one or more cations selected from potassium, cesium and rubidium; and (o) drying the material under conditions such that the PPI (loss on ignition) at 900ºC is reduced to less than 10 weight percent; to thereby selectively adsorb said para- isomer, and (ii) contacting the adsorbent with a desorbent material, under desorption conditions, to effect desorption of said para- isomer of the adsorbent.
