  2. A device according to claim 1, characterized in that the mover means (14) support the drive means (11) in part.

  4. A device according to claim 3, characterized in that the manual operating member (15) is a grip handle fitted to the support body (13).
  5. A device according to claim 3 or claim 4, characterized in that the support body (13) is fitted with a running member (18) making it easier to move the span frame in its movement direction.
  6. A device according to claim 3, characterized in that the rotary drive means (11) include gearing coupled to rotate with the mandrel (7) and with a drive motor member supported by the support body (13).
  7. A device according to claim 1, characterized in that the rotary drive means (11) comprise a motor-and-gearbox unit coupled to rotate with the mandrel (7).
  8. A device according to claim 1, characterized in that the rotary drive means (11) include reversible control means for winding in or winding out the covering element (2) relative to the mandrel (7).

A method of using a device according to any one of claims 1 to 8 to cover and uncover a surface (3) with a windable covering element (2) on a motor-driven mandrel (7) forming part of said device (1) that is made in the form of a span frame supported by the longitudinal edges (31) of the surface, being movable in a translation direction (F) over the surface substantially perpendicularly to the width of said surface, the method consisting in:
    · making a self-supporting sheet as the windable covering element (2), the sheet being of width greater than the width (ℓ) of the surface (3), being constituted by a series of hinged-together rigid slats, and being adapted to support the weight of at least one person when it is itself supported solely by the ends of the rigid slats;
    · dimensioning the span frame so as to be supported by at least the longitudinal edges (31), while leaving free a bearing space (25) for the sheet on each longitudinal margin (33) of the surface;
    · attaching the sheet at one end to one of the transverse edges (32) of the surface and via its other end to the motor-driven mandrel (7); and

A method according to claim 9, characterized in that, in order to uncover the surface (3) covered by the sheet bearing at least on the longitudinal edges (31), the method consists in simultaneously causing the mandrel (7) to wind in and the span frame to move over the surface in order to wind the sheet (2) onto the mandrel (7).
  11. A method according to any one of claims 9 to 10, characterized in that it consists in making a self-supporting sheet (2) of a shape that is analogous to the shape of the surface.
