Claims (10)

  1. A knife folder (10) for folding a sheet material (44), said knife folder (10) having the following features:

    a sheet-material conveying means (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) used for conveying the sheet material (44) and comprising at least one pair of rotating conveying components (54a, 56a) whose axes of rotation (62a, 64a) are arranged in a second direction substantially at right angles to the first direction,
    the folding device pushing the folded sheet material (44) between the conveying components of the at least one pair of conveying components when it is at its folding position,
    characterized in
    that the folding device comprises a knife (34) extending in a third direction substantially at right angles to said first and said second direction;
    that, on the side facing the knife (34), the rotating conveying components (54a, 56a) have a reduced diameter in comparison with their maximum diameter; and
    that the sheet material (44) can be conveyed in the third direction by actuating the conveying components (54a, 56a).
  2. A knife folder (10) according to claim 1, characterized in that
    the conveying components (54a, 56a) of the sheet-material feed means (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) consist of a pair of conveying rollers (54a, 56a) whose roller axes (62a, 64a) are arranged in said second direction.
  3. A knife folder (10) according to claim 2, characterized in that
    a plurality of pairs of conveying rollers (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) is provided, said pairs of conveying rollers being arranged in spaced relationship with one another in said third direction.
  4. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 2 to 3, characterized in that
    the rollers (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) of said pairs of conveying rollers are frusto-conical.
  5. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 2 to 3, characterized in that
    the rollers (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) of said pairs of conveying rollers taper towards the knife (34).
  6. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 2 to 5, characterized in that
    one roller (54a - 54g) of each pair of conveying rollers is adapted to be driven and that the other roller (56a - 56g) is spring-loaded in the direction of said first roller.

    outside of the folding area (40) of the knife folder device, a pair of cylindrical pressure rollers (68a, 68b) is provided such that it is arranged in spaced relationship with the pair of conveying rollers (54a, 56a, 54g, 56g) in said third direction.
  8. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 1 to 7, characterized in that
    the stop (50) is arranged on a sheet-material support (42) between the sheet-material feed means (12) and the knife (34), said sheet-material feed means (42) having a recess through which the knife (34) extends between the conveying components of the sheet material feed means (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) when it is at its folding position.
  9. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 2 to 8, in dependence upon claim 2, characterized in that
    the knife (34) is provided with at least one recess (38a - 38e) which is located in a mutual contact area of the rollers (54a - 54g, 56a - 56g) of the pair of conveying rollers at the folding position of the knife folder device.
  10. A knife folder (10) according to one of the claims 1 to 9, in dependence upon claim 2, characterized by
    a stop (50) up to which the sheet material (44) is fed prior to being folded.
