Norwalk Police Officer, Department Recognized For Traffic Safety
Officer John Haggerty and the department's Traffic Unit received honors from AAA Northeast for outstanding achievement in traffic safety.
NORWALK, CT — Veteran Norwalk Police Officer John Haggerty and members of the department's Traffic Unit recently were honored by AAA Northeast for outstanding achievement in traffic safety, officials announced.
Haggerty was named the 2019 AAA Northeast Traffic Safety Hero of the Year, and the unit received the group's Gold Award, which also recognized the Norwalk department's continuing efforts to educate and protect Norwalk's citizens. The awards were given out during a ceremony on Oct. 31 in Bridgeport.
A decorated, 22-year veteran of the Norwalk Force, Haggerty is one of the original members of the Traffic Unit, which was created in 2011. During those eight years, he has made more than 1,230 drunken driving arrests and issued more than 3,500 infractions for motor vehicle violations.

Officer Haggerty is a leader within the unit and always participates in the Distracted Driving, Click It or Ticket and Drunk Driving enforcement operations within the city. Officer Haggerty works tirelessly to make Norwalk's streets safer for motorists and pedestrians through enforcement. Officer Haggerty is also a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. In 2018, he and Officer Wasilewski checked or installed over 100 car seats. Officer Haggerty can often be found with a new parent or parent to be, educating them about child passenger safety, while installing their car seat. His proactive approach to his job and hard work help to make Norwalk a safer community for the motoring public.
