Novo Mesto, Slovenia, August 24, 2021
Plans to open the first Orthodox monastery in Slovenia are well underway.
The official Instagram account of His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church reports:
We are extremely happy. We bought property for the first Orthodox monastery in Slovenia, near Novo Mesto. I dedicate it to the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. Wonderful landscapes, wonderful nuns, wonderful people… A blessing for warm-hearted Slovenia.
Slovenia is under the Serbian Orthodox Metropolis of Zagreb and Ljubljana, which Pat. Porfirije headed from May 2014 until his enthronement as Patriarch in February of this year. There are currently four active monasteries in the diocese, all in Croatia.
As of 2019, Orthodox Christians made up 3.7% of the population of Slovenia, with the overwhelming majority (72.1%) professing Roman Catholicism.
