Nazir Amir
Dr Nazir Amir is a Master Teacher at the Academy of Singapore Teachers, Ministry of Education (Singapore). Through research in the Singapore classroom, he developed the ‘Relevant, Appealing and Personal’ (RAP) pedagogical guideline. This guideline helps teachers design lessons to teach content (across different subjects) in enjoyable and meaningful ways. Such lessons have led to many academically-less-motivated students to be intrinsically motivated and engaged in their lessons, getting them to develop positive attitudes towards their studies. The RAP-infused lessons have also provided teachers with avenues to foster the creativity of these students in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) areas, leading them to feel a sense of self-worth in their academic and inventive potentials.
Nazir currently mentors professional communities of teachers in exploring ways to design lessons that will intrinsically motivate and sustain the engagement of students who are especially academically-less-motivated, in view of getting them to learn academic content (across different subjects) through enjoyable and meaningful lessons, both in and out of regular classroom settings. He is very passionate in working alongside teachers, guiding them to reflect on ways to improve their pedagogy. He constantly shares with teachers on how doing classroom research has led him (and his colleagues) to become more effective teachers, which in turn has had a positive effect on their students’ learning. Apart from being invited to present his work both locally and at international platforms, Nazir has also published numerous research articles in international peer-reviewed journals and book chapters so that the wider education community may benefit from his classroom research. Nazir believes that seeing students and teachers benefit from his guidance is all the motivation he needs to keep pursuing his passion in teaching.
Dr Nazir has received multiple awards for his contributions to education. He was awarded the President’s Award for Teachers (2014), the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching (2016), Fellow of the Academy of Singapore Teachers (2012), the Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award (2016) and three Dean’s Commendation for Research Awards (2012 & 2014) by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Outstanding Physics Teacher Award (2014) by the Institute of Physics Singapore, the Inspiration Award for Science Teaching (2012), the ERAS teacher-research paper prize (2013), and four Outstanding Contribution to School Awards (2005, 2009, 2012, & 2015). In addition, he led his school to clinch a Gold award at the MOE Innergy Awards (2015), a Gold award at the Singapore In House IQC Assessment (2015), and a Merit award at the Public Service 21st Century (PS21) Excel Awards (2015). He was also awarded one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2016 (Singapore) by JCI (Singapore) and is a top finalist in the Global Teacher Prize 2016 organized by the Varkey Foundation, amongst several other awards.
