While I rate works mainly on the basis of enjoyment, it is necessary for me to be satisfied with its quality in a higher manner. Enjoyment does not always necessitate a show with quality storytelling. People's rating standards are not always merely based on entertainment either. You can enjoy terrible shows too and perhaps continue watching since we pinpoint a reason to care about how they end. It is solely because enjoyment does not inevitably result in worthwhile value. There is also ironic enjoyment as well. In certain cases, although they may not be dull, it feels completely empty or devoid of purpose. Enjoyment and the quality of the work are not synonymous. To a greater degree, many users are subjected to confirmation bias, only seeking out viewpoints that match their own.
10/10:In simple words, an utmost cathartic experience. These works are the most potent and heartfelt works that I have never stumbled upon before. Not just from animanga, but all mediums as well. Irreplaceable content that holds dear to me for all eternity. These are great series with a deep personal resonance that I have been immersed in. They remind me of the sole reason I love this medium in the first place. Objectively, there is no such thing as a 'perfect' anime/manga but these are entries I will ride with despite the flaws it may have. If there is a series that is 10/10 despite no resonating effect, it means I don't feel comfortable to rate it lower.
9/10:Peak. The main difference is I might not resonate with these series as much. This is animanga at its peak, with content that is unparalleled. Themes, stories, and characters are heavily explored. They show the abilities of what it offers conceptually in a clear and convincing way. Superlative script, audiovisuals, characters, and ideas utilized to its fullest potential. I would consider these to be my favorites as well.
8/10: Profound. A series that I am passionate about and love. Engaging stories that have an endearing cast. They may be intellectually stimulating, conceptually deep, or philosophically challenging. These may still be among the best works that animanga offers on an entertaining, creative and conceptual level. They are not always going to leave a strong personal connection but they still have left a substantial impact on me. It does not have to be a complex series.
7/10:Works that I adore wholeheartedly. The difference is it might not contend with entries that I love with enormous passion. These are works I can easily recommend despite the flaws. While they are not compelling series, they were still charming and makes me crave for more.
6/10:Series that I like or admire in spite of the flaws it has. Decent/above average. Better than your average anime/manga. These titles have positives that outweigh their negatives. They had promise but may be lackluster due to poor execution or flaws that prevents it from grasping their full potential. I can still recommend these series.
5/10: Definitely not bad but simply mediocre. Not a lot stands out to me. While the show may have a lot of positives, it has just as many negatives. It may have unique qualities but the series does not utilize anything to make use of it. This is where it can be forgettable for me unless if it's a popular series.
4/10: Below average. Doesn't mean it's terrible - but rather weak where there were more flaws than positives, but not by a staggering amount.
3/10: This is where I can safely say the work is dreadful. Very poorly written and presented. They offer minuscule value. Easily digestible titles with nothing to take from them.
2/10: Egregious. It can't get any worse than this...right?
1/10: Abysmal. It does get worse and I question my life decisions as I'm watching this fuckfest. Series that I dislike with a passion.
These would be authentic ("realistic") characters that are unique and three-dimensional. With real-life attributes, extraordinary appearances, endearing personalities, and meaningful backstories. They have motives that influence their actions or decisions, which help create a narrative in the story. There will be no depth in some of these characters. To put it simply, it also includes characters that I plainly adore, resonate with, or aspire to be.
Yes, but only in a positive manner or emotional way (it only affects your mood). People shouldn't seek validation in fictional characters either (Though I think that's obvious enough). If a work relates to your long-held thoughts and helps you reconcile inward feelings, then sure, it is undeniably a good thing. This is where it only affects you in a positive or emotional manner. There are only two types of people that could possibly be influenced by fiction to do bad things. People that are mentally unstable, and people that can't differentiate fiction from reality. It is literally that simple.Fiction is not real. Anyone with common sense and a healthy mind know this. We're going back to the "video games cause violence" controversy. If I have fun shooting people in FPS games, does that make me want to shoot people irl? No. Do you see how absurd it sounds? There are no creditable sources that back up the claim. There's also sane people who complain anyway because there would be fictional works that doesn't align with their political views or it hurts their personal sensibilities. But that sounds like a personal problem from there, not the work itself. Sorry to say, but we're not entitled to these works.
Thanks for the insights on the background of Look Back! I enjoyed watching it overall and grew attached to the meanings behind the film in the end. In the beginning, as the scenes were playing out, I began to understand what was coming and had certain expectations given my previous experiences with his works. Which meant I got worried that my familiarity with his style in these types of storytelling would derail my enjoyment but I'm happy that didn't happen. I have a feeling that the Look Back one-shot is gonna be worth the read though.

Yea, Kayoko's characterization is actually very well thought out in where she is both very endearing and relatable. She also reminds me of some people I befriended back in high school.
I'm not quite finished with MahoYoru yet, but Alice's personality and design really appealed to me a lot. She's usually calm, cool, and collected, and doesn't tend to connect with others due to how she was brought up, but her time spent with the likes of Aoko and Soujuurou (especially the latter) slowly but surely opened her up. She's also quite a badass in fighting and is very skilled, but has her own notable weaknesses that prevent her from being a flawless one-noted character.
Do you ever experience ''I guess I'm not a target audience anymore'' moments? I might be getting older, but stuff like konosuba used to be good for at least few chuckles, now I'm just sitting there with no expressions thinking what am I even doing with my life... might just be that show's formula getting exhausted of course, but I genuinely feel vastly burnt out with school/comedy/shounen genres and gravitating towards seinen or just old atmospheric movies when I'm not working or studying.
I thought I might have said something that offended you, happy to see it was not the case (right?) since I'm not used to writing in English. Thanks for responding.
At least with film or literature, the target demographic is more diversified and plenty of content aims at adults, which means better quality control in writing and execution.
I might have gotten that wrong but who decides what is adult and what is not. Sometimes by adults they mean the movie is rated for adults because it has violence, gore, and sexual themes. So the movie itself doesn't really have much to say, it is just rated for adults because it has these specific scenes.
Some other times the movie claims to have mature themes and that the story is written for an adult audience but again when you watch the movie you will realize that all those claims are actually a big lie, the story is trying to sound mature, it is trying to tell a mature story but it fails at doing so. So Simply because something says that it is aimed for a mature audience, doesn't make that thing a product of higher quality. To be honest it's one of the reasons that I am cautious with western media, while there are amazing titles out there, they have some of the most pretentious stories ever. They try to pretend that they are talking about serious stuff, and mature topics only to fall flat and fail. An example from the top of my head, Avatar movie.
That's why I like anime, most of the time, if the topic is nothing that big or mature they don't try and pretend it is something big and mature; they just tell the story they want to tell, nothing more nothing less. And if they want to handle mature topics and stories they try their best. Of course there are exceptions. There are titles that try to pretend they are handling a serious and mature topic only to fail.
Depending on how it's used, any form of human expression is art.
Well said.
I wish that was true. But to be fair it's only a small amount of people that feel this way.
They're will always be people that complain about everything, be it anime, games, movies, literature. There are always people that are unhappy with what they consume and social media is filled with these unsatisfied people. Sometimes what they say is true and sometimes it’s nothing important. Paying attention to them is just a waste of time so don’t let them bother you because at the end of the day people will move on and no one cares what they were saying. The video you sent is from a year ago and I bet there are people out there that are still complaining about Berserk but who cares, they get a couple of likes and everyone forgets. I used to watch a lot of videos from Hero Hei, to be honest I really like his content he sheds light on a lot of topics, but at a certain point I thought I want to stop that, because my mind was filled with so many unimportant messages and news, and all those news did for me was to make my day worse so I stopped. I still give him a like whenever I watch one of his videos.
Maybe what I’m saying is hilarious but I’m trying to look at the bigger picture and not to bother with petty complaints on twitter by some random person. No offense to Hero Hei for covering this sort of stuff, it’s just not for me, seeing stupid people saying stupid stuff hurts my brain, sometimes I take it too seriously. What is happening nowadays is that anime is getting more and more popular, whether we like it or not.
While anime does have a diverse fanbase, you don't see people talk about it in western media since it's not as popular. Maybe except for some rappers and celebrities but that's probably it. Also, due to the misconceptions people have about anime, you'll get flamed for talking about anime or even having an anime pfp. There's so many misconceptions people have about anime in the mainstream media due to the "effortless" shows made.
To be honest I think it's the matter of who you ask from, if you ask some normal people that usually follow normal trends on the internet, They probably have not much of an opinion about anime because in the first place they don't really care about it, they might have seen some popular shows like Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer, they may say how they have nostalgia with Dragon Ball Z but they do not have a solid opinion about anime since anime is like any other form of media for them, they just consume it and move on. That's why I think saying that “effortless” shows are the reason that people do not have a good opinion about anime is wrong, since your average Joe doesn't even bother to watch seasonal anime, they just watch big hits that are popular so that they can just jump on the hype train.
If the industry tries delicately without any rush, the narrative told through anime and manga can contend with the most critically acclaimed shows, films, and novels. But since the medium is predominantly populated with mediocre (by mediocre I simply mean shows with common tropes without any depth in the story or characterization) and worse media—and it's getting more hopeless as time passes—90% of production companies, producers, and authors want to create anime, manga, and light novels that will be popular, so they rely on overly used formulas and generic themes when writing, thus yielding a ton of stuff.
Can't we say the same thing about other Industries as well? For example look at Hollywood and how they are making a lot of bad movies, with a really mediocre script. The latest one is Acolyte, the Star Wars series, that everyone is clowning about on YouTube. Most games that are coming out nowadays are also really mediocre and repetitive they lack creativity and it seems like no one in the team cared about the game they were creating, good example of it is Ubisoft, They once created amazing games like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Prince of Persia but now they have been releasing almost the same game for a long time.
I think it is something that happens whenever corporations decide to enter an industry. More and more you see that every new title that is being released has almost the same story, and same characters it is as if all of them are trying to use a certain formula and make profit out of it, they don't want to take risks, they don't want to experiment, they just want the project to be successful, so that people will pay for it, and anime is no different.
It's seen as nerdy, weird, perverted, etc. You can find Ghibli films but what are the chances they would put their time into these movies especially with the misconception's they have? It also doesn't help with the fact it's foreign, so it's mainly a cultural difference issue. In the U.S., we don't really expand our horizons.
I don't live in the U.S., in fact, I don't live in any other Western countries either, but I've seen a lot of video essays and in those videos, people treat anime like any other type of media, as if it is not even an anime, like it's something completely normal and understandable. I think people came to understand and accept anime as another popular type of media like how they did with games, I mean at one point gamers were considered nerds, but now games are another popular, completely normal and accepted way of entertainment (some even argue that certain video games are art).
What I love about animanga is the fact that it's more... honest? Whether that'd be the fanservice, storytelling, etc. As it gets more popular we won't be getting these types of shows anymore. I sometimes gatekeep anime since people love to complain about fiction for some reason. (Such as Berserk. Twitter tried to cancel it)
Regarding canceling Berserk on Twitter, I think that time is behind us, people don't treat berserk that way now. There are always controversies but they come and go, nothing to take seriously. At the end of the day people that really appreciate something real stay, and people that were just hanging around for the fun of it will leave for something else. I was once one of the people that would make fun of anime fans but at some point I started to watch anime and I liked it. It didn't feel pretentious, it felt genuine and real like no one is trying to teach you. It talks to you with honest true feelings even if it is bad, even if it doesn't have much to say it tries to be honest and that’s something I appreciate. An aspect of anime that I love is how they try to show how simplicity can be beautiful, no wonder that we have genres like CGDCT or Slice of Life, the way they focus on daily life of normal people and finding joy in simple things in life... (can't find the right word for it :) ).
With all the popularity anime has gained, I thought people get that like any type of media anime also has different aspects, but seems like I was wrong.

— btw have u planning to watch an modern anime from this season or later.
im really sick of recycled stories xd
