As a matter of habit I don't like harem anime. I feel that they are pandering piles of unoriginality almost every time. The main characters don't even have anything to make all of these girls want them, there is a ton of pointless ecchi, and in some cases the girls are actually okay with competing with each other over a boy. The only person who would like something unoriginal like that would be the worst kind of otaku. Except, I actually liked this one. I'll explain why.
First off, it steers clear of some things. There's ecchi, but the girls actually use it as a tool
...
to get the main to fall for them. Some girls do use their "feminine charms" to try to pick up guys, so this is believable. On top of that, the manga is far more about romance than most harem manga are. The emphasis is on the romance, not the ecchi. I like that. Plus, the girls all avoid the stereotypes romance fans expect them to fit.
Thats not to say that this manga restores my faith in the harem genre. It still gets plenty wrong. The main character IS a weak willed doormat, the girls ARE okay with competing with each other over a boy they all like, and the ending DOES disappoint. At least for me.
This is the same author that wrote and created the art for Kimikiss and Amagami, and the art here is just as gorgeous thanks to Shinonome Taro's beautiful character designs.
If you like harem for the romance, this one won't disappoint. With great art, interesting female characters, and a few instances of the rules of the harem anime being broken, there is a lot to like here. Unfortunately, some of the trappings of pandering and comedic nonsense still exist, so don't go into this expecting anything mind blowing.
