Synopsis

Mafia is rife in America where assassinations are a regular occurrence on the streets. Inferno, a mysterious company, is behind most of these dealings through the use of their near-invincible human weapon, "Phantom."

One day, a Japanese tourist accidentally witnesses Phantom's latest murder. Desperate to escape, the tourist hides in a secluded building. However, Phantom, revealed to be a young woman named Ein, and the leader of Inferno "Scythe Master" captures the tourist and brainwashes him.

Given the name "Zwei," this once peaceful tourist is now a puppet of Inferno with no memories. Drawn into a world of lies, deceit, and violence, Zwei must fight to survive, hopefully to one day regain his memories and escape from this world where he is constantly on the brink of death.

Killers don't deserve a happy ending.

I've come to discover I love media about hitmen. The psychology of those who take lives, and the context that led to that. This one's about what looks like an adult, but it's no more than a teenager. 16-year-old, brainwashed protagonist, Zwei (two) who knows nothing about anything.

An underground man manages to place him with a previous victim, and trained hitmen, Ein (One), to train him so both become the greatest assassins on planet earth. It's a twisting story about what it means to search for meaning, when it's been snatched from you.

I absolutely adore how the ...

Mixed Feelings
Overall, I have mixed feelings about the series. Reiji and Eren were great characters and I loved everything involving them. Some side characters, like Claudia, Lizzie, and Cal, were rather well done in their own rights. I just don't feel the same about any of the other side characters though, since most of them just weren't all that interesting and so much of the series was focused on their machinations. Inferno in general was a mixed bag for me, and while Scythe had his moments, he just came off as a bit of a mustache-twirling villain who didn't care if he sacrificed his pawns. Maybe ...

I really, truly wanted to love Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. A lot. It started alright, too: an interesting lad without memories gets brainwashed to become a premium assasisn and gets associated with an emotion-free girl named as "Ein" while he becomes "Zwei," the second amnesiac assassin.
Then, he learns his name, then he keeps working as an assassin, then he takes in a small girl as his protegee, then he is betrayed from every possible angle by every possible person and scenario. The thing is, all these are up to episode 18 and from episode 18, it is only downhill in terms of storyline, ...
