Maou 2099

Five hundred years ago, the fantasy world of Alneath was torn apart by a war between magically gifted immortals and mortals armed with magical artifacts. The conflict came to an end when mortals' hero, Gram, slayed the Demon Lord Veltol Velvet Velsvolt. In 2099, the world looks a bit different. Alneath and technologically advanced Earth have fused in an event known as Fantasion. Immortals have been hunted down to near extinction, and technological implants called Familia allow mortals to use magic.

As the new world slowly recovers, Veltol's vassal Machina Solege resurrects him in Shinjuku, a techno-magical city constructed in the middle of devastated lands. However, Veltol's magic is severely weakened, and his former ally Marcus has betrayed him. To regain his fame and magical abilities, Veltol follows the advice of Takahashi—Machina's friend and a professional hacker—to start an unusual career: live streaming. His sharp tongue and comically poor gaming skills quickly secure him followers, but to dominate the world once again, Veltol must first uncover Shinjuku's secrets and thwart Marcus' vile plans.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

"Demon Lord 2099" caught my attention right away - mainly because who wouldn’t be intrigued by a demon lord in a neon-drenched cyberpunk city? A fantasy cyberpunk fusion? That’s a setup you don’t see every day.

The story starts out in classic fashion. We’ve got a demon lord, he gets taken down, time passes, and bam! Reincarnation in the year 2099. Veltol, our illustrious demon lord, returns to a future where magic and technology have fused, creating an entirely new world. Once the terrifying ruler of a medieval landscape, he’s now just a relic in history—at least until he decides that this high-tech metropolis will be ... his for the taking.

Alright, let’s dive into the review!

The animation so far is solid. It’s not what I’d call breathtaking, but it fits the tone perfectly, balancing between the magical and futuristic. It’s not about to compete with the visual standards of Chainsaw Man or Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, but it doesn’t need to. For the type of story it’s telling, it’s doing the job well. I mean, at least it’s way ahead of Tower of God Season 2’s animation, which feels like it barely even tried.

The sound follows a similar path. I’ve got a soft spot for the opening and closing music; they have that mellow cyberpunk vibe that sticks with you. As for the other tracks, they’re good, they fit, and honestly, that’s all I really ask for. The music is like the story’s background heartbeat, and it does its job.

Now for the big question: the story and setting. The plot itself? So far, it’s fairly typical if you look past the cyberpunk setting. There aren’t any wild twists or new storytelling innovations, but the setting is what makes it feel fresh. It’s a refreshing take on the classic demon lord trope, and I’m all for it. Veltol as a character works well in this setting, bringing a bit of that old-school demon lord flair to the high-tech world.

The world-building is surprisingly well-done. The small details scattered throughout the episodes make Shinjuku feel immersive, almost tangible. I found myself drawn into the setting multiple times; it’s clear that the creators put in the effort to make this world more than just a backdrop. The setting, without a doubt, is the main selling point.

So, what’s the verdict? Look, this isn’t top-tier anime, but there’s nothing glaringly wrong with it either. I’m genuinely enjoying it so far, even if it’s not the type of show that’ll blow you away. It’s perfect for a chill evening with a cup of tea and some snacks, and what more can you ask for? If I had to sum it up in one word? Vibes.

This first 3 episode gave a special vibe and feeling, i felt a long time ago.

This series is great and just outstanding. there are a lot ot part when the things can go wrong when the show has this much theme (i mean reverse isekai + cyberpunk world + magic powers and so on)
The style and animation art straight away from episode one i felt this was gonna be good. Id say this is a stylish edgy, action anime not to take to seriously just enjoy the action and good looks.

Overall a fun cast of characters with their own magic powers (+ characters have ... a good vibe/humor too).

I recommend this anime to everyone who whould like to watch a comedy, fantasy anime with a pretty good world build.

I was not sure what my next review here would be if i ever wrote one again but this series got me, it was a bit of a roller coaster but in the end i had to step away. The start of the series felt generic but purposefully so in order to enhance the swap to the cyberpunk world, I can appreciate that, stripping the MC of his power and showing him that the world is beyond him was a great move and created an interesting dynamic and i was excited for more.

Sadly this series for all its neat premise and decent visuals cannot ... stand against the tropes of the times, almost as fast as the MC was shown weak, powerless and lost to the times, he was just as quickly given back high amounts of power, immediate understanding of tech and was thrown into a degree of popularity, what could have been a great series about the demon king learning humility and having to struggle to regain his former powers became a generic series about how awesome he is at everything.

I am saddened by how many shows follow this path, how little the industry seems to appreciate the struggle of the heroes story, he gets his power from faith and his faith is almost instantly given to him, he is a fantasy demon thrown into a tech world but is allowed to instantly understand how the tech works and replicate parts of it, even becoming a streamer, something that in a future world would be bigger and harder to get into is handed to him instantly to facilitate getting his powers back, the show can pretend a lot of time and struggle happened but if it happens off screen in a montage it does not elevate the story it simply waves it away.

It is okay to show struggle, its ok for a character to not understand or be bad at things and it can last longer then one scene, the desire for every series to become a power fantasy just so fans can ogle how awesome the MC is has to die at some point or the poor writing choices that plague it will become the standard, this show could could been what cyberpunk edge-runners was, it could have been an amazing story but in the end it just fell into the pitfalls of easy writing.
