On Monday, April 23, Robert Cardillo, the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, delivered a keynote address at the GEOINT 2018 Symposium in Tampa, Florida, where he announced a new platform and stressed NGA’s continued focus on people, the global GEOINT enterprise and future opportunities.

Here are the Top 5 takeaways from his remarks:

1. Refuge & Assuredness

Cardillo took the stage and said that the profession of GEOINT provides assuredness in a world that is less tethered to ground truth.

2. Four Strategic Goals

Cardillo said that in a world where trust is elusive and confidence is fleeting, NGA’s GEOINT must be instantly available — expertly validated — highly trusted — and easily consumable.

In this context, the director spotlighted the four strategic goals of the agency:

3. We must work continually

Cardillo said Team GEOINT provides America and its allies with the world’s premier geospatial-intelligence service, but future success is not guaranteed.

“ In the face of renewed great power competition and the proliferation of geospatial capabilities, we must work continually to ensure the continued dominance of GEOINT to protect American interests in the future.” — NGA Director Robert Cardillo

4. GEOWorks

Cardillo announced NGA’s platform to allow people outside the agency to access datasets and tools. The portal is a place where problem solvers, companies, non-profits and academics can access data — to build tech — and advance the NGA mission.

5. Automation, Artificial Intelligence & Augmentation

The director spoke about Automation, Artificial Intelligence, and Augmentation and said once the governance structure is in place with acceptable accuracy levels, NGA will fully automate — from image to all-source databases and intelligence repositories.

* Bonus — Art & Science

Cardillo said NGA will continue to innovate through art and science.
