The Grand Finale

Steve and I have called Highborne Cay the high point of the trip for our guests.  We left on April 18 for Nassau Harbor.  The Grand Finale of our visit with friends is a day at the Atlantis Marina on Paradise Island.  We enter the harbor on the west side and must check in with harbor patrol.  After an ok from harbor patrol- we had no troubles entering the harbor and finding Atlantis!  

We were met at the dock (one of the furthest away from the dockmaster's office--the cheaper seats) by a very capable dockhand who got us settled very quickly and sent us on our way to the office to register so we could go explore the water park.  

Xuma for Dinner

On our last night at Highborn (April 17)  and after a long day of fun in the sun, it was time for dinner at the Xuma.  We had so many choices it was hard to decide.  Should we have the Herb Seared Chilean Sea bass? How about the Seafood Rissotto, or the Blackened Mahi Mahi?  All were delicious at the waterfront restaurant overlooking the beach.

Time to get back to the boat and pack up--we are heading to Nassau tomorrow morning bright and early!

Shark Feeding Time

An evening ritual at Highborne is to walk down to the end of the docks where the catch of the day are cleaned and put on ice.  The remains of the fish are then tossed over to the sharks who are eager to get their dinner with little effort.

Ride a bike--don't take the bus!

John F. Kennedy said "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride."  Nothing brings back childhood memories like riding a bike.  We thoroughly enjoyed our ride around Highborne.

Highbourne Cay

As Steve and I planned the trip for our friends, we wanted to finish the Exuma's at Highborne Cay which we consider to be the highpoint of the trip.  The views are breathtaking, the beaches are impeccable, the food is delicious and the service is top notch. 

The marina at Highborne Cay is in the little scooped out area on the Western Side of the island.  Notice the narrow course to get inside. 

The picture shows the breakwater with the marina in the background.  The structure on the top of the hill is the exercise room-no walls to catch the breeze.  

While aboard Meandering Joy (also known as Boot Camp by Joy & Steve) we believe in keeping our guests busy.  We headed for the bike rack to explore Horseshoe Beach.  We had the beach to ourselves.  The resort provides paddle boards, kayaks and Hobie catamarans.

The Star Thrower

While searching for abandoned shells, we discovered several starfish.  I found this story about the starfish by Loren Eiseley and thought I would share it

The Star Thrower

A man was walking on the beach one day and noticed a boy who was reaching down, picking up a starfish and throwing it in the ocean.  As he approached, he called out, “Hello!  What are you doing?”  The boy looked up and said, “I’m throwing starfish into the ocean”.  “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the man.  “The tide stranded them.  If I don’t throw them in the water before the sun comes up, they’ll die” came the answer.  “Surely you realize that there are miles of beach, and thousands of starfish.  You’ll never throw them all back, there are too many.  You can’t possibly make a difference.”  The boy listened politely, then picked up another starfish.  As he threw it back into the sea, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”

Lunch at MacDuffs on Norman's Cay

We decided to hike over to MacDuffs for lunch today.  It is quite a hike since the new airport has been completed.  There is a fence that surrounds the airstrip making it impossible to just cut across to the restaurant.
