Graduated from the law department of Northern Indiana Normal School in Valparaiso. Elected school superintendent of Knox County, Ky. in 1893 and 1897, was admitted to the bar in 1894, then elected secretary of state of Kentucky in 1899. Arrested and convicted for being an accessory to the murder of Democratic gubernatorial candidate William Goebel, he was pardoned by Kentucky governor Augustus Willson.
