T E L L YO U R S TO R Y I distinctly remember sitting on the floor of my childhood bedroom with my mom and sister a few months after I got engaged fretting over what the theme of my wedding was going to be—it felt like so much pressure. In hindsight, I realize that the pressure I felt wasn’t so much about wanting a “theme,” but wanting a way to tell my and Mickey’s story. What I was truly fretting over was figuring out how to personalize the day and put our unique stamp on an event millions of couples throw every year. If this sounds familiar, then you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to our personalization issue! We’ve packed it full of ideas to help you put your own spin on everything from your guest book and color palette to your wedding party ensembles. Plus, you’ll find tons of inspiration from real couples, including how they made
TKM19SUM_FOB_EdLetter.L [P].indd 26
their weddings feel uniquely them. And believe it or not, what you register for also says a lot about you as a couple. Check out our designer-approved suggestions for what to add to your wish list on p. 122, and then head to TheKnot .com/registry to get started. And in case you’re wondering where Mickey and I landed with our wedding theme, we ended up looking to New York City to guide our day—the city where we met, fell in love, got engaged and continue to build our life together.

Inclusivity is important. And if there’s ever a time you want your family and friends to feel like they belong, it’s on your wedding day. Turn to p. 44 to read the beautiful and powerful story of one couple who worked to make their wedding inclusive for those living with disabilities, from adding braille to their invitations to hiring disabled vendors.

MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS We tapped some of the photography pros from our issue to get the scoop on the best shots.
What should couples be mindful of when booking a destination photographer? Often a destination wedding is in a place fairly unknown to you, so it’s important to find a photog familiar with the area. Ask if they’ve worked at your venue or have ideas for beautiful portrait spots. Not only do you want to make sure they’re up to the task, but you want to feel comfortable. It’s hard to connect with new people in such a short time, so get to know your pro before the day of. Share your love story and a few things about you and your partner. Your photography is likely the only keepsake you’ll have from your wedding, so you should be completely satisfied with the end result. @stanlophotography
CHRIS CRAYMER PHOTOGRAPHER & DIRECTOR “MIAMI HEAT” (P. 166)

Sometimes the weather can surprise you. What’s your best advice to ensure couples still get the beautiful shots they planned on? When I am photographing couples, I tend to just work with the weather conditions rather than against them. If it’s raining, get out a clear umbrella and make the most of it; if it’s hotter than you expected, take off the suit jacket, pull out some fun sunglasses and soak in the rays. Go into your own bubble and forget about everything else, including me and the weather. I think it’s important to capture those real moments, and unplanned weather on your day is a just a part of life! @chriscraymer
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
I love the idea of bringing back disposable cameras—process them on future anniversaries to keep the surprises coming!
REBECCA CRUMLEY SENIOR DIRECTOR, REAL WEDDINGS How do you suggest couples approach finding their perfect photographer? First, figure out your photography style. Think of the ads, magazines or even movies you love, then go old-school and tear out pages or organize inspo with our planning app. These tangible references are gold when helping your pro understand what you’re into. Then, use social media to see what a photographer is all about. Hiring someone you can relate to means you can @rebecca_crumley relax and just let your genuine radiance shine through!

How can a couple feel more comfortable in front of the camera? Do an engagement session! It’s a great way to practice poses, break the ice and learn what angles you like best. I think a photographer’s first job is to make sure their clients are comfortable, so I always try to put mine at ease by joking with them and treating them the way I would a friend. I tell them during our interview that if they hang up the phone and don’t think they would want to spend the whole day with me, then I’m not the right fit for them. We’re by our clients’ side for the entire day, and our personalities have to be a good match for them to let their guard down for the best shots. @rebeccayale

Set up a wish list at big-box retailers like Target and Crate & Barrel, register for one-off items from your favorite Etsy shop or even ask for cash for a new car, your honeymoon or even a house fund. F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

as one of the first clients for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. In addition, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get chaotic as it goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you’ll feel much calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, going first lets you chill before getting dressed and gives you time to make sure you absolutely love your look before your pictures begin. If you’ve hired pros, your team will know how to make your hair and makeup last all night.
is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family ping-pong tournaments at holiday parties? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all.

Most Influential Weddings of 2019
MIAMI MAGIC We kicked off our Most Influential Weddings of 2019 in style— with a trip to Miami. Twenty of our to-be-weds joined us at Faena Miami Beach for some fun in the sun. We welcomed the crew with dinner next to a gold-plated woolly mammoth (you know, casual) followed by cocktails in the penthouse suite. And what’s a party without presents? We surprised everyone with their very first gift off their The Knot registries. The rest of the week we soaked up sunny vibes with a visit to the Wynwood district, a poolside brunch and some serious spa sessions. Our influencers are relaxed, rejuveniated and ready to plan their #bestdayever day with us!

ESSAY
“My colleagues at Open Style Lab and I designed a bouquet holder to give the illusion that I was holding one,” Christina says. “My neck can’t support heavy hair accessories, so the team at Johnathan Hayden created my veil by adding silver hand-painted flowers on the trim that looked identical to real lace and beading.”
When C H R I S T I N A M A L L O N (30 and a partner at Open Style Lab and an inclusion strategist at Possible) was confronted with an undiagnosable disease that doctors associate most with ALS, she vowed to become an activist, not a pessimist. “I adapt to my paralysis by creating inclusive scenarios that challenge the perception of what it means to be disabled,” Christina says. Case in point: she and J A M E S M I C H A L O V E (32 and a portfolio manager) dubbed their wedding #InclusiveIDo to accommodate any guest in attendance who might be handicapped, no matter how visibly or severe. “Even the small tweaks we made had a huge impact.”
How one bride’s inexplicable disease inspired a celebration that could truly be enjoyed by all. BY B EC KY M U R RAY
James and Christina added braille to their invitations for guests with vision impairments. Because not everyone can—or necessarily needs to—read braille, depending on the quality of their sight, the couple printed their stationery on white paper and used a black and dark green font. Color contrast is known to enhance visiblity for anyone with sight issues, Christina explains. Even the flowers were outlined so that all recipients could appreciate the detail.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY M2 PHOTOGRAPHY “Twenty percent of our vendors had a disability, just as 20 percent of the world does,” Christina says. “Handicapped professionals are extraordinarily creative because they have to be innovative in order to manage living in a world that wasn’t designed for them. Jessica Ruiz is an extremely talented artist. She applied makeup for my rehearsal dinner with brushes controlled by her mouth because she’s unable to use her arms.”
“I have to wear slip-on shoes because they’re the only type of heel I can put on by myself,” Christina says. “These and the pair I wore for the reception belonged to my grandmother.”

“My bridesmaids were allowed to wear whatever they wanted, as one dress didn’t suit everyone’s body type and skin tone,” Christina says. “We created a special rest lounge for guests to relax away from the chaos,” Christina says. “There were also bags at each table with earplugs in case anyone was sensitive to loud music.”
“We donated all the flowers to an elderly home by working with a company called ‘Forget Me Not’ (ForgetMeNotFoundation.org),” Christina says. “We spent so much money on the flowers and wanted them to be enjoyed beyond our wedding.”
“We had difficulty finding an accessible venue that fit our aesthetic, so we researched parks and historic places, as they are usually governmentowned and have to abide by The Americans with Disabilities Act,” Christina says. “We fell in love with Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park Horticulture Center in my hometown and booked it for the ceremony and reception. Having our entire celebration in one location was less taxing for guests, and we provided details about the property and clarified its accessibility on our wedding website. We also provided transportation that even guests in wheelchairs could use.”
“We had a cake cutting, but James cut it himself since I couldn’t. Only one of my hands was paralyzed when I met him, and since then, I’ve lost the ability to use my shoulders and my other hand,” Christina says. “We were super nervous about the first dance because I can’t hold my arms up, but we worked with an instructor who figured out a way for me to position them. I found that most vendors wanted to help find a solution rather than to shut me down.”
“I added some circular tables into the mix at the reception,” Christina says. “My friends in wheelchairs are always stuck at the end of a rectangular table, and I wanted them to feel part of the conversation.” “I was adamant about having my dad, who’s a judge, marry us,” Christina says, knowing she’d be hosting people with a variety of religious backgrounds. “Every guest might have different beliefs in God, but we all can agree that being a good person is number one, and I feel like my dad represents that belief system.”

THE MAVERICKS
THE HISTORIANS
Kerry Sullivan Smith “always felt a stronger connection to the name Kerry than to Allison,” her legal first name. Her parents chose the middle name to honor their ancestors’ roots to County Kerry in Ireland. “When I’ve told people that my legal first name is actually Allison, they’re always a little surprised and, more often than not, their reaction is ‘oh, but you’re SUCH a Kerry,’” Kerry says. “Your name kind of becomes you, and you kind of become your name.” When she got married, Kerry legally dropped Allison, and took her maiden name of Sullivan as her new middle name. The final step: taking on her husband Dennis’s last name, Smith. “In regard to changing my last name, my view of feminism is about having the agency to make the choice,” Kerry says. “I see taking Dennis’s last name as the opportunity for us to build our new family together. It’s the name we as a couple, and the family we create together, will identify with. To me, it’s a reflection of the fact that we love each other and want to build our lives together as a new family.”
What’s in a name? YO U D E C I D E BY LOUIS BARAGONA
As the definition of marriage evolves, so do the possibilities of what to call yourself. Couples of all kinds are finding unique ways to personalize the thing that literally personifies them, from creating a whole new name to skipping the change entirely. Now more than ever, the options are endless. Get inspired by how these four couples did it.
THE CREATIVES T H E TO P T E N
THE TS INDIVIDUALIS Ben Clos + Jared Nyhart When Ben Clos and his now-husband Jared Nyhart talked about what to do with their last names, he admits he initially expected Jared to take his name. After all, Ben felt a strong responsibility to “carry on a family name and create a legacy” as the only son. The pair ultimately decided to keep their respective names, but with a caveat: They plan to give their future kids Ben’s surname. “By the time most people get married, each person has a career, an online presence and an identity around their name,” Ben says. “There are lots of things we still do because that’s the way we’ve always done them, but new traditions can be made.”

Jasmine + Layne Braquez When Jasmine Vasquez and Layne Brace got married, they debated hyphenating their names but found the two just didn’t click when put together. Thus, they merged their names to form a totally new last name, Braquez. “My husband and I come from homes of single moms, so our last names had a lot of significance and worth attached to them,” Jasmine says. “I think our new last name helps both of us keep a sense of where we came from and who we were before marriage, and it gives us a strong, meaningful foundation to build our lives together.”
Sarah Zlotnick + Zach Harris Sarah Zlotnick admits that she was “self-conscious” about her last name growing up, but after losing her father at 25, she wanted to carry on the legacy of the man who raised her. “My sister and I will be the last living people with the Zlotnick last name in our family, so though it’s kind of morbid, it’s important to me to take the Zlotnick name to the grave,” Sarah says. Together, she and her husband, Zach Harris, decided to pass on his last name to their children. “Zach places so much emphasis on the relationships in his life,” Sarah says. “If we can help imbue our children with the same values by emphasizing their place in the Harris clan, I’m more than good with that.” For his part, Zach is in total agreement. “I’ve always assumed she’s her own individual who will make her own choices,” he says. “For her to honor her dad in this way is great. I know how much it means to her.”

You spend money on beautiful sugar flowers for your wedding cake only to... throw them out? We think not! GRO OM FOR IMPROVEMENT Real talk: A solid prewedding beauty routine has no gender. Add these new makeup lines for men to your grooming routine to get photo-ready. Men experience the same complexion issues as women (we’re looking at you, dull skin, blemishes, dark circles and unruly brows), so why shouldn’t they have the same solutions? In a major moment for gender inclusivity, luxury brands like Chanel and Tom Ford are expanding their makeup lines to include products catering specifically to men. Boy de Chanel offers foundation, brow definer and lip balm, while Tom Ford’s more expansive line includes men’s makeup plus skin care, shaving and body products. “I love the wild ways people are using makeup now— piling color upon the lips, or just taking a gloss and sweeping it on the eyes. It’s very creative,” Wells says.

fter leaving her post as founding editor and editor-inchief of Allure magazine after 24 years, Linda Wells launched Flesh and assumed the role of chief creative officer at Revlon. Inspired by the ath-luxury (read: athletic luxury) designs of Milan and Paris, Wells describes her makeup line as “beauty’s answer to the comfortable-yet-stylish trend.” Taking a cue from Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, Wells also sought to make Flesh highly inclusive, offering 40 foundation shades as well as 10 shades of nude lipstick and lip gloss. “There’s a nude for every nude and a color for every mood,” she says. ››
TKM19SUM_FASHBTY_BeautyInfluencers.L [P].indd 89
Beauty Tips “I love a blushing bride. Our Tender Flesh blush is a best-seller for a reason. It’s unimaginably soft, lush and a wildly flattering mood-elevator. Some brides believe that they need to do more— more makeup, more elaborate hair—on their wedding day. But sometimes less looks best. That said, it’s entirely personal.” Flesh Beauty Tender Flesh blush in Fever, $26, Ulta .com; Noir Epices by Michel Roudnitska perfume, $320, FredericMalle.com

Beauty Secret “I discovered apricot kernel oil recently. I’ve been using it on a daily basis, and I’ve noticed a big difference in my skin and in my hair.
“Don’t deprive yourself. I know I need to drink more water, so I have two glasses before my morning coffee— I’m not giving up caffeine.”
B obbi Bro wn THE GURU
obbi Brown made waves in the ’90s when she created a small line of neutral lipsticks that were in stark contrast to bright colors trending at the time. Over the years, Brown turned her lipstick line into a cosmetics empire. In 2016, Brown stepped down from Bobbi Brown Cosmetics to pursue her passion for wellness, founding Beauty Evolution, which includes her supplement-focused brand, Evolution_18. “I want do for wellness what I did for beauty,” she says. “When I started Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, it was a sea of confusion—nothing was easy to apply or natural. That’s also the way I view supplements. I want to simplify health for women and men.”
Beauty Tips “Think about what you put in your body. Once you start adding collagen and probiotics to your diet you will look—and feel—better.” Beauty Collagen Shot, $10, Evolution_18, Walmart.com
TKM19SUM_FASHBTY_BeautyInfluencers.L [P].indd 90
Wellness Hacks “Skip soda and go for fizzy supplement tablets you can dissolve in water. If you don’t like swallowing pills, try gummy vitamins—they’re good for you and they’re delicious.” Beauty Bubbles Collagen tablets, $15, Evolution_18, Walmart.com

elebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal turned a childhood obsession with all things “gorgois” into a lifelong career. After leaving a pre-med program to pursue makeup, Mally became the go-to artist for dozens of celebs like Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. Frustrated by makeup that didn’t last or photograph well, she founded Mally Beauty in 2005. “It’s all about bulletproof makeup you can put on at the crack of dawn that still looks great when you go to bed,” she says.

Looking to tie the knot sailor style? You’re in luck—nautical nuptials are a forever classic, but we’re loving the fresh preppy touch they’re getting lately. Start with a refined navy and white palette, then add a pop of personality with New England–inspired details like rich kelly green, vintage blue and white dishware, and sophisticated seaside touches. Get the party started by serving up a Dark and Stormy signature cocktail, then segue into a lobster boil feast for dinner and dancing under the stars.
With historic ties to boating and the sailboat racing community, this crowd-pleasing rum cocktail is perfect for your signature sip. STEP 1 Pour two ounces of a dark rum (Gosling’s or Myers’s are traditional) over ice into a highball glass. STEP 2 Top with ginger beer and the juice from one lime wedge. STEP 3

safari ADVENTURE AWAITS Lions and tigers and bears—oh my! BY MARIA BOUSELLI
It’s your honeymoon, aka time for a once-ina-lifetime trip for two. If you’re animal lovers and looking to do more than just lounge on a beach somewhere, we’ve got the perfect trip for you: a safari. Here are our top picks to get you in touch with your wild side and spot some furry friends (cheetahs, monkeys and walruses included) along the way.

From the minute you enter the Maasai Mara, your adventure begins. You’ll be greeted by the team at Mahali Mzuri—most of whom are local Maasai who live in communities nearby—and shown to your tent, outfitted with a claw-foot tub and fully stocked minibar. But don’t be fooled by the luxe touches—you’re in the middle of the Mara reserve, and at night you can even hear lions roaring from miles away. You’ll wake up before dawn each day to go out with your designated game driver to

As the sun sets, they’ll set up sundowners: their version of happy hour. At night, cozy up by the fire as you sip some vino and reminisce about your day. Post up at one of two deluxe bandas (huts on stilts) each equipped with a fireplace, terrace to take in views of the lakes and volcano, and a personal butler. But enough about the property— you’re here for one reason: to see the gorillas. Reserve your trek ahead of time to secure a spot (it books up months in advance). You’ll be paired with a guide, who’s lived (yes, lived!) with the gorillas and become well acquainted with them. Once you spot the furry creatures, you’ll hang with them for an hour, so as not to cause any disruption. Bonus:

Eighty percent of the rooms on board have a balcony, and every one boasts ocean views. Two on-board photography guides will help you capture the magical landscape (imagine the Instas!). CEREMONY A friend officiated the service that took place near Cypress Creek under a cedar arch and a canopy of oak trees. BOUQUETS The two carried foraged succulents, bluebonnets, cork, mint and milkweed. MUSIC A bluegrass band learned an edited version of “Cowboy Take Me Away” by the Dixie Chicks. “We had them sing ‘Cowgirl’ in replacement of ‘Cowboy,’ ” Annabel says. FOOD The family-style Southern fusion menu included braised carnitas and sriracha fried chicken. FAVORS Annabel and Rachel gifted guests linen sacks of wildflower seeds to plant at home. CAKE The Mexican chocolate and butter pecan cake topped with succulents sat on a wood pedestal. STATIONERY Their photographer created the watercolor suite, which included an oak tree drawing.
Texas bluebonnets were
an easy choice for Annabel Kugler (29 and a social worker) and Rachel Brightwell’s (35 and a gynecologic oncologist) wedding. Not only are they in-season locally in April, but also they deliver on color, keeping the day’s primary shade, blue, front and center in everything from centerpieces to Rachel’s hair and Annabel’s lapel. Celebrating outside was a priority for the pair. “We wanted a place that was natural, beautiful and reflective of our mutual love of the outdoors,” Annabel says, who even proposed at nearby Mount Bonnell. The Texan touches extended beyond the environment. Annabel’s signature cocktail, “Heart of Texas,” mixed Tito’s with soda and muddled strawberries and jalapeños, while guests took home the couple’s “Lone Star BBQ” dry rub as favors. —Becky Murray

CEREMONY Erin and Josh braided three cords together during their ceremony, symbolizing Christ’s place at the center of their relationship, as illustrated in Ecclesiastes 4:12. Josh’s dad even laser-engraved the verse onto a shadow box Josh’s grandfather made. STATIONERY Erin designed nearly all of the paper goods, including the watercolor invitation digitized with hand-painted flowers. ACTIVITY A “watercolor station” invited guests to add color to pages of hand-drawn butterflies. DRINKS Guests clinked glasses of Trader Joe’s blood orange Italian soda. DESSERT Along with cake, guests sampled mini creme brulees and Erin’s mom’s “famous” homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Though Erin Thorsell
(27 and an educator) and Joshua Warner (23 and a mechanical engineering student) grew up in the same town, ironically, they didn’t hit it off until they had distance between them—293 miles, to be exact. To celebrate their relationship’s evolution and to make use of Erin’s background, which includes a degree in plants and insects and a knack for art, they filled their wedding with butterflies. “Butterflies are beautiful, and I love their life cycle,” Erin says. She even created a “bug hunt,” sending guests onto the grounds with a custom map in search of insect drawings. Winners went home with a milkweed plant—a gift that, like Erin and Josh’s compatibility, revealed itself in time. “Monarch butterflies are on the decline and can only lay eggs on certain pollinating plants, including milkweed” Erin says. —BM

FLOWERS Pampas and sorghum grass, plus dried fan palm, added drama to the altar backdrop and showed up in groupings around the resort. SIGNAGE Jenifer and June’s initials were positioned on the edge of the resort’s infinty pool, which borders the Indian ocean. BRIDESMAID DRESSES Jenifer designed custom silk charmeuse wrap gowns for her best girls. ACCESSORIES June added British bulldog cufflinks to his Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo in honor of their own pups who couldn’t travel abroad. BOUQUET The dark-bluecentered anemones in Jenifer’s bouquet were right on palette, while white garden roses and carnations popped against wild eucalyptus.
Traveling has always been important to Jenifer Thai (33 and a jewelry designer) and Truong “June” Vo (38 and an entrepreneur). They met precisely because Jenifer repeatedly flew to LA to visit friends while working in Seattle. Soon enough, her time in California increased when she took up an apprenticeship with a goldsmith and moved in with June. Once engaged, they knew they’d hop on a plane for their wedding. “June wanted Bali because it’s the only place in the world that we travel to together every year,” Jenifer says. They looked to the locale and other far-flung destinations for inspiration, importing décor from Vietnam and Morocco to create their version of paradise. “If I could choose my heaven, it would be a kaleidoscope of bright jewel tones, patterns and light,” Jenifer says. —BM

TABLESCAPES The design and architecture in Fes and Marrakesh inspired the mix of collected objects, including the gold vases and lanterns, Jenifer says. Acrylic table numbers propped in gem stones and finished with city names, like Saigon, otherwise known as Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, gave dining tables an even more worldly spin. ENTRANCE The newlyweds added pyrotechnics for their head-turning walk into the reception. CAKE A Moroccaninspired cake topped with an air plant shared the spotlight with a table of other desserts and exotic delicacies, like snake fruit and mangosteen. DINNER An Indonesian buffet, which included a suckling pig roast, created a relaxed atmosphere. DRINKS Guests sipped fresh coconut water straight from customized coconuts with bamboo straws.

VENUE Dancing kicked off under the light of Founders Hall’s historic lofted glass ceiling. FLOWERS Tall floating arrangements of white orchids, roses and peonies filled the venue, from the tabletops to the walls. ESCORT CARDS Guests found their names written on cards suspended from a crystal curtain installation. MUSIC Partygoers hit the dance floor to the sounds of everything from The Carters to Musiq Soulchild. SHOES Diamondstudded loafers added even more sparkle to Tavon’s look. DESSERT A custom fondant medallion brought a regal touch to the seven-tier cake. DÉCOR Instead of color, Samone and Tavon played with texture and structure, including sparkling glass, black-andwhite tile, gray velvet and aged metal.
Samone Leach (28 and a homemaker) and Tavon Wilson (28 and a safety for the Detroit Lions) have a talent for combining the sentimental with the finer things in life. After their engagement on family game night, the couple started planning a celebration centered on loved ones, with Tavon even walking down the aisle with his grandmothers. “We wanted clean lines and colors in order to keep the focus on the important details,” Samone says. “Think: simple, but elevated.” Crystals, metallics and purple lights decked Founders Hall, from accent walls to vases of floating candles. However, Samone and Tavon both agree on their favorite part of the day, the ultimate statement: their meeting at the aisle. “As Samone turned the corner, I thought ‘finally, it’s really time for us to get married,’ ” Tavon says. —Louis Baragona

COLOR PALETTE Red and pink balloons struck a celebratory vibe in the muted industrial space. TABLE NUMBERS Black cards laser cut with modern fonts marked tables. BOUQUETS Red anemones and dahlias added a saturated pop of color to the bridesmaids’ all-black looks. DESSERT “Cocktail hour was more important to us than cake,” Sarah says. Instead, guests ate cookies and mini cheesecakes throughout the night. MENUS The paper’s bold font and graphic floral design contrasted with the black flatware and subtle centerpieces. FOOD STATION To honor Sarah’s late father’s love of Italian food, guests took bites of roasted red pepper and prosciutto from an antipasto bar. BAR Guests sipped cocktails as they trickled into the venue’s attached beer garden.
For Sarah Zlotnick
(30 and an editor at Philadelphia Wedding magazine) and Zach Harris (30 and an analyst at a consulting firm) there’s a line between formality and fun—and they make a great team walking it. Exhibit A: After Zach proposed on Georgetown’s campus, the pair partied with loved ones at Sarah’s favorite college bar. From there, “We had two priorities,” Sarah says. “The wedding needed to be formal enough to satisfy Zach’s traditional Southern tastes, but it also had to be one hell of a party.” The pair filled the industrial La Peg with playful neon signs and balloon installations next to black flatware and table numbers. Meanwhile, guests rocked black-tie attire and sipped champagne while playing cornhole. “We told everyone to come hungry and dressed to kill,” Sarah says. —LB

GOWN SILHOUETTE STYLES
trumpet gown
mermaid gown
The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.
The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.
This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.
a-line gown
ball gown

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.
The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.
This slim, formfitting silhouette hugs the body from head to toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.
The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.
2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

1 Visit Sulphur Springs, a “drive-in” volcano, which last erupted two centuries ago. 2 Make sure you check out Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rugged mountains located on the island’s southwest coast; they’re among the Caribbean’s most recognizable landmarks. 3 You’ll need a guide to enter the island’s restricted rainforest region, so sign up for a tour to walk through the dense foliage and swim in one of the tropical waterfalls. If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.
6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.
If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.
9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.
5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.
10 If you or your groom loves jazz music, plan your trip around the three-day St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held every May.

Bob Marley’s birthplace, Kingston, is perfect for honeymooners seeking their reggae roots or even just a starting point for spa trips and hikes in the beautiful Blue Mountains. 3
Many popular Jamaican destinations are between one and two hours from the Montego Bay airport by car. Make sure you bring Dramamine if you’re at risk for motion sickness, as taxi drivers take the curvy roads at quite a clip.
6 To see Jamaica at its best, go during Carnival, the highlight of the Jamaican year, in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MoBay each April and in Negril each May. 7 Reggae lovers should wait until July for the Reggae Sumfest, held in MoBay. 8 While shopping in Montego Bay, be polite and don’t hesitate to haggle. Sellers are insistent. 9 Coconut water—sold as “ice cold jelly” at roadside stands—and conch soup are said to heighten amour.
Take our word that in Negril, dirty dancing is the norm, so don’t be afraid to whip out some moves your man’s never seen before! 10

Plus, the food options are stellar, from simple fish tacos and ceviche to avant-garde Mexican fare served in casual beachside settings.
B E S T T I M E TO V I S I T Skip the crowds in December and January and visit February through April, the tail end of dry season. November sees some rain but still offers plenty of sun and empty beaches for an almost-private escape.

Not even the most powerful hurricane can take away the effortlessly chic vibe of Saint Barth’s. There are enough idyllic white-sand beaches to try out a new patch of sand every day and plenty of nightlife spots to dance the night away.
B E S T T I M E TO V I S I T November through June offers the best weather—many hotels, including Cheval Blanc, shut down for hurricane season, from September through mid-October. Christmas and New Year’s brings a see-and-be-seen crowd, so prices skyrocket. W H E R E TO S TAY Cheval Blanc has prime real estate on dreamy Flamands Beach and boasts one of the islands best spas from cult brand Guerlain. Whitewashed rooms and bungalows are accented in neutral and pastel hues, and you can choose between a beach or garden setting. From $820, including breakfast and airport transfers; ChevalBlanc.com W H AT TO D O Colombier Beach is only accessible by foot or boat. TUSCANY
218
B E S T T I M E TO V I S I T Spring, especially early May, is picturesque, as the hills are carpeted in blooming poppies and sunflowers. The weather is in the low 70s and the summer tourists haven’t yet descended, so there’s less foot traffic in the nearby towns. By October, the tourists have gone but sunny weather remains warm enough for cycling and even picnics at the beach.
MAKE IT LAST Continue basking in that honeymoon glow even after you’ve unpacked by bringing some edible souvenirs home. Opt for regional specialities, like olive oil, vinegar, jam and pesto. Then make plans for an at-home date night and tackle a new Tuscaninspired recipe.
W H E R E TO S TAY Set among 3,200 olive trees, Locanda Rossa is a stylish farmhouse located just outside of the medieval village of Capalbio. Last year, the property added 20 new suites, most with terraces or gardens, but with only 38 rooms (including four villas) total, the vibe is still intimate. Meals are a highlight because the honey, olive oil and much of the produce is harvested on-site. Two pools are ideal for lounging after a day of exploring. From $104; LocandaRossa.com W H AT TO D O Locanda Rossa has road and e-bikes available to rent. From the hotel, it’s an easy 30-minute ride to the weird and wonderful sculpture garden at the Giardino dei Tarocchi (IlGiardinodeiTarocchi.it). SOUTH AFRICA
B E S T T I M E TO V I S I T Sabi Sands boasts ideal travel conditions year-round. The hot, lush summer (October to April) offers the best opportunity to see baby animals. Winter (May to September) ushers in cooler days and cold nights, thinning the bush for great game viewing. W H E R E TO S TAY The newly opened, modern andBeyond Tengile River Lodge blends style and sustainability. “Tengile” means serene in the local Tsonga language, and the nine suites, each with a private deck and pool, will certainly feel as such.
