A NOTE FROM HUNTER McGRADY I was so excited when The Knot asked me to be the guest editor and cover model of the Fashion Issue, not only because I was planning my own wedding, but also because I knew it would be an amazing opportunity to talk about inclusivity. I’m passionate about this particular topic because I believe all sizes, races and genders deserve representation. Growing up as a girl with broad shoulders and wide hips, I never saw models who looked like me in magazines—I had no one to relate to. As a bride-to-be, I also knew it was all too easy to make wedding planning about weight loss. But if there’s one thing I hope this special issue gets across, it’s that your day is a celebration of your own unique and powerful love story—not a challenge to lose weight or fit a certain vision. So, while you’re planning this awesome moment in your life, remember to accept yourself and enjoy your journey.

When the team and I started talking about our Fashion Issue, one thing was top of mind—it had to be inclusive of all people and styles. While a white dress and black tux are beautiful, they’re by no means your only options. After all, on your wedding day, you should feel like the best version of yourself—and what you wear can play a big part in that. So in addition to our coverage of Bridal Fashion Week (read: stunning white dresses), you’ll find stories of real brides who wore something other than white— from a black gown (p. 44) to a purple suit (p. 46). We also interviewed a partner at Bindle & Keep (p. 110) on custom suiting for all body types and gender identities. And finally, we tackle the issue of size inclusivity head on (p. 154). Real talk: The wedding industry has been criticized in the past for not showcasing people of all shapes and sizes. At The Knot, we want to change that, so we tapped size-inclusive advocate, model and newlywed Hunter McGrady to guest edit this issue and help us highlight where the industry is making strides and where there’s still work to be done. (She also agreed to wear her Watters wedding dress on our cover, as well as model six others for our fashion story Body of Work on p. 146.) Overall, our message is simple: When it comes to wedding fashion, you do you.

You’re passionate about travel, so with that in mind, do you have any fun hacks for acing a destination wedding or honeymoon? I like to keep packing light and simple. I separate everything—bathing suits, pajamas, shoes—into mesh packing cubes (which makes unpacking at a hotel a breeze) and always do a load of laundry while I’m traveling. Along the way, I love to shop and collect souvenirs, often shipping things home so I don’t feel limited by my luggage. Pro tip: Keep a travel folder with language apps or maps on your phone. I also save the locations of recommended restaurants, markets and shops on Google Maps in advance of my trip. I keep those handy in order to get me from point A to point B. I also keep a travel notebook to jot down my experience as I go. @sarah.smart.style

What’s your best advice for those looking to go the custom dress route? It’s important to have a clear vision of what you want and find a designer that specializes in that look. Make sure you and your team develop a game plan for the entire process, from the timeline to @ladyxay the total cost.

What typical mistakes do couples make when creating a shot list? A long shot list is unrealistic and can be painful for everyone involved. Keep it simple. Before creating one, ask yourself exactly how much time you want to spend taking pictures on your wedding day. The answer will guide your list. Besides, sometimes the best shots are unplanned. Personally, I like a @johnny_miller_ documentary style.
Wedding planning can be stressful. How can couples alleviate some of that prewedding anxiety? Remember to take the long view. Wedding planning is only a phase and will be over before you know it. Even though the process may be stressful, remember that you and your partner are a team, so treat each other’s needs with respect, and be each other’s advocates. You’re not just planning a wedding together—you’re preparing to spend your life with your best friend. It’s only the beginning. The @getlasting best is yet to come.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
BECKY MURRAY REAL WEDDINGS EDITOR In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion (just like JT did on p. 184). Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs @beckygotmurrayed you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. STYLE
How can we find attire that’s modern and of the moment but will still feel timeless 20 years from now? S H E L L E Y B R O W N : If you’re really feeling a certain trend, like feathers, fringe or bold color, don’t worry about how it will age and just go for it! However, if you’re not into a super-fashion-forward look and want your wedding attire to stand the test of time, opt for more classic silhouettes and details that won’t go out of style. For example, if you love the idea of sleeves, choose cap sleeves or long lace sleeves and skip riskier interpretations of this trend, like puffy or split sleeves. Opting for clean, modern fabrics like silk faille or crêpe is also a great option—they’re definitely having a moment right now but are understated enough to look fresh for years to come. Where formalwear is concerned, it’s hard to go wrong with a traditional black tux or dark gray suit and chic lace-up dress shoes.
PERSONALIZATION
How do you suggest we approach our wedding fashion when we really don’t want the typical attire? EA

R HUNTE “Society has us convinced we need to have a big, emotional “this is it” moment when dress shopping, but that’s not always the case. Don’t get discouraged— the day isn’t about what you wear. It’s about marrying the love of your life.”
B R I T T N Y D R Y E : Be open to wearing something more in line with who you are rather than caving to what you think you should wear. Your wedding day look should be an elevated version of your everyday self—choose something that makes you feel like a million bucks, even if it isn’t white, formal or expected. If you’re stumped at figuring out exactly what you want, I’ve found music and film award shows like the Grammys and Oscars are often ripe with inspiration (I’m still swooning over Billy Porter’s red carpet moment in his Christian Siriano tuxedo gown).

M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

I loved the idea of buying a Jacobean print, and I fell for this embroidered fabric, then brought it straight to my dressmaker. On our wedding day, I felt like my most authentic self—and that’s the most timeless look of all.”
S T R O N G S U I T “I was always a tomboy as a kid and would cry every time my mom put me in a dress,” Heta says. “I chose burgundy because Hindu brides wear red and white, and I wanted to incorporate a bit of my culture despite not having a traditional wedding. The color also complemented my complexion and fit our celebration’s industrialurban aesthetic.”

When I revealed my look to my bridal party, my sister-in-law said, ‘You look like a piece of art,’ and that was exactly how I felt: one of a kind.”
In ancient Rome, brides typically wore white or yellow for their walk down the aisle, but it was Queen Victoria who popularized white specifically when she wed Prince Albert in 1840. Fast-forward to today, and any color goes. What’s most fashionable is wearing something that represents you. Get inspired by how these real brides personalized their looks.

hen it comes to my everyday style, I tend to lean masculine. Think: gentleman-style butch, though I’ve been known to go a little over-the-top. I haven’t worn dresses since the ’90s, so I always knew I was going to wear a suit on my wedding day. I just didn’t want it to be the traditional black. That isn’t me. From the time Megan and I got engaged, it was important to both of us that it felt like my wedding day too, all the way down to what I wore down the aisle. We’re both brides, after all. Before we chose either of our looks, we decided on the vibe of our wedding. After some searching, Megan and I fell in love with a jewel-tone, autumn-inspired palette for the décor. The darkest color in it was a vibrant, eye-catching purple. It struck me: Purple is kind of feminine, but it’s different. I thought it
TKM19FALL_FOB_Essay.L [P].indd 46
could work for my suit because I really wanted to stand out. The look had to feel like me, but all of the classic colors seemed kind of blah. Bright purple was anything but. To make my colorful vision come to life, I went the custom route. As a queer-identified person, I was nervous walking into places that traditionally dealt with men, but the tailors I worked with were very open and accepting. Finding that striking shade of violet was much harder than I expected, though. I almost lost hope, but eventually, we found the right swatch, even if the fabric was over budget. Once we got through the struggle of finding the material, customizing the details was actually fun. I chose a different shade of paisley trim for the collar, which offset the look nicely, especially with the gold embroidery
of our wedding date. I loved going to fittings and watching the suit come to life piece by piece. I was impressed by the suit itself, but the flower necklace took it to a new level. I knew I didn’t want to carry a bouquet and though I’ve worn ties, I was on the fence about wearing one on my wedding day. When Megan and I discovered these full flower necklaces with the help of Pinterest, it just clicked. I worked with our florist to pick the blooms, adding light orange flowers to the mix for a real pop. In the end, my wedding day look was dapper, bright and totally me. Megan was in awe and even a little jelly of my necklace (it totally stole the show), but mostly, she was happy for me because it was such a process. It was all worth it though—this suit remains one of my fave memories of our wedding day.

RING REPORT
FANCY THAT What makes these stones so special? Simply put: They aren’t round brilliant cut (aka the most popular diamond shape). Set yourself apart from the crowd by opting for a fancy cut sparkler.
ASSCHER
HEART Hopeless romantics: This one’s for you. Nothing symbolizes an epic love story quite like heartshaped bling. Given its very specific look, it’s also the rarest and most expensive of the bunch.
Sometimes called a square emerald, an asscher cut serves up vintage glamour. While it’s less sparkly than some other diamond shapes, its unique geometry is mesmerizing. Pair it with sleek side baguettes for old-world flair. Price upon request, MarisaPerry.com
$2,420 (not including center stone), AJaffe.com
PEAR While this marquise and round diamond hybrid was considered passé in the late ’90s, the pear is back and more fabulous than ever. To find a perfectly juicy one, look for a symmetrical teardrop shape that’s not too skinny or bottom-heavy. Price upon request, UneekJewelry.com
MARQUISE
$1,665 (not including center stone), SylvieCollection.com
OVAL The closest to the round brilliant cut and easily the trendiest shape (we bet you’ve seen a lot of it on the ’gram), oval diamonds are made for the bride looking to put a fresh twist on an old standard.
Price upon request, Kwiat.com
$11,200, DeBeers.com
CUSHION
EMERALD
Also known as a pillow cut, cushions look like a rectangle with rounded corners. If a colorful center stone like a pink or yellow diamond is on your wish list, consider opting for this cut—it holds and shows off color better than most other options. $3,366 (not including center stone), SimonGJewelry.com
PRINCESS A square-shaped diamond with an array of sparkly facets, this ladylike shape is the second most popular after the round brilliant cut. For an edgy take on this classic, go for a princess diamond set on the diagonal. $5,600 (not including center stone), SayYesWithKarl.com
TKM19FALL_FASHBTY_RingReport.L [P].indd 86
If you love the hall of mirrors effect of the asscher cut but are in the market for a more elongated look, this is the rock for you. Fun fact: Emeralds are also the go-to diamond of the über rich and famous; its fans include Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian. $2,990 (not including center stone), Tacori.com

RADIANT The radiant marries the elegance of the emerald shape with the brilliance of the round (pun intended). The end result? A stunning square with trimmed corners.
Legend has it this unique shape was named after Louis XV’s mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, and was inspired by her smile. We love it for two reasons: Its cut instantly slims the hand and gives the illusion of a larger stone.

OUR EXPERT Rae Angelo Tutera is an LGBTQ+ advocate and partner at Bindle & Keep, a bespoke suiting company based out of Brooklyn, New York. @raeangelotutera
Expert on Call Custom suiting clothier Rae Tutera of Bindle & Keep gave us the scoop on going bespoke—no matter your gender identity or body type.
What are some common misconceptions about the bespoke suiting process? We’ve all been conditioned to think of suiting options—like most things—in a binary way. When clients come to us, they often still think of suiting in terms of “men’s” (masculine) and “women’s” (feminine) suits. It’s all they know. Because of this, the first step in our process is to basically reprogram our clients’ thinking so we can retire the myth that there are only two kinds of suits out there. How can the suiting process be different for someone who isn’t cisgender? It’s common for trans folks to have less experience with suiting than cisgender folks. Retail spaces in general don’t make people of trans experience feel
TIME IT RIGHT

The Bindle & Keep showroom in Brooklyn, NY
comfortable or welcome; it’s hard to trust the suits will do our bodies and genders justice—and worse, it’s hard to trust salespeople. We try to make our clients feel as comfortable and welcome as possible, and we make sure they know they can trust us with their bodies and their stories. There are a lot of things that can be done to help trans clients feel more at ease when they arrive for their first fitting. Many of our clients include their pronouns in their emails to us when they’re scheduling their fittings, so we make sure we use them. We’re also mindful while measuring people’s bodies. Getting measured isn’t the most comfortable experience, regardless of how you identify, so we narrate what we’re doing, explain why we’re doing it and make sure we’re sensitive. We’ve learned to take measurements that make our garments perform the way our clients want them to, so if we have a client who says they want their suit to be feminizing, masculinizing or neutralizing, we can do that. Clients generally haven’t experienced a garment that has an awareness of their body and their presentation, and it’s soothing when they begin to understand that they control how their suit will look and feel.
3-4 MONTHS OUT Make initial appointment
for measurements. Be prepared to talk about what you want your suit or tux to look like.

What differentiates Bindle & Keep from other suiting companies or tailors? Bindle & Keep is a body-positive company, without exception. For example, some tailors charge based on how many yards of fabric they need to order to make a client’s garments (read: the larger the size, the more expensive the suit), but that’s not something we do. We understand that people have different bodies and present their bodies differently, but we don’t charge them differently for it. We’re also by appointment only, and we schedule a two-hour window for a first fitting. This extra time allows us to really get to know our clients before we measure them.
1 MONTH OUT Second fitting. Try on your suit or tux and discuss any additional alterations with your tailor.

How far in advance should to-be-weds start shopping for a bespoke suit? We encourage clients to come to us about three to four months before their wedding. It works like this: After your first fitting, we’ll place your order. About 10 to 11 weeks later, we’ll invite you back for a second fitting, where you try on your suit for the first time. Often, there are alterations to be done, which can add a week or two to the process.

FINISHING TOUCHES Personalizing your look doesn’t have to stop with a custom suit. Add one of these stylish options for extra flair.

How can those with a smaller budget minimize the cost of a custom suit? WATCH A contemporary look for weddings is to 41mm Moonphase custom unisex wear a beautiful jacket and more neutral timepiece, $630, BaumeWatches.com pants. If to-be-weds operating on a budget happen to own a pair of black or navy dress pants they love, they can then have a jacket custom-made (starting at $596). Another contemporary look, especially now that so many weddings are set in the country, is to just wear a beautiful vest (ours start at $298). For those who find that they have fairly good luck with
What’s the best way to navigate physical changes (weight fluctuations, transitional development, etc.) when choosing wedding attire? When folks go on hormone replacement therapy (also known as HRT) or gain or lose significant weight, it’s hard to anticipate exactly how their bodies will change. We remind our clients that we can only measure the body they have. That said, we understand that bodies shift—it’s part of being human—and we’ve learned how to anticipate shifts. We construct our garments to be adaptable, and our seamstress is extraordinarily talented when it comes to doing alterations. We suggest those getting married get their wedding attire as close to their day as possible, that way their garments will be as aligned with their bodies as possible. What are the pros of going bespoke versus buying off the rack? Are there any pros specifically for trans or nonbinary folks? Some do have good luck with off-the-rack suiting, but many find themselves feeling limited by the options they come across. Generally speaking, off-the-rack men’s suits are hyper-masculine and off-the-rack women’s suits are hyperfeminine. Even if to-be-weds shopping off the rack do feel like the available options make sense for their genders, it’s rare that they actually fit. When you get something bespoke, you have the benefit of building a relationship with a tailor. We alter our suits for the lifetime of the suit. Therefore, a bespoke suit often has a longer lifetime than an off-the-rack suit.
111
POCKET SQUARE
What can people expect to spend on a bespoke suit? Our first tier is $895 for a custom suit, and ordering a vest adds an additional $298. Sometimes clients don’t realize that getting a custom suit can make the imperfections in their off-therack dress shirts more obvious. For instance, when a jacket fits impeccably, it will make a collar look even looser than usual, or shirt sleeves look even longer than before. That said, a custom shirt adds about $155 to $165 to the total. Our second tier is $1,095 for a suit ($365 for a vest), our third tier is $1,295 for a suit ($431 for a vest) and we also have speciality fabrics that start at $1,695. Something to keep in mind: We don’t charge for alterations. Wedding dresses are notorious for having expensive alteration processes, so most folks expect to navigate the same thing with custom suits. That said, many bespoke suiting companies do charge for them, so make sure to ask about the tailoring process at your initial fitting.
off-the-rack suits, alterations are essential in making the garments look really polished. If you don’t have a tailor locally, ask around—it’s likely you know someone who has a tailor they trust. It can also be comforting to order suits online in several sizes and try them on in the privacy and safety of your own home if you don’t live near a store you feel comfortable browsing in. For instance, you can get a suit from ASOS for about $200—and they have extended sizing too.
What are some ways to personalize a suit or tux? Our clients design their whole suit, from macro-decisions, like the fabric it’s made from, to micro-decisions, like the color of the piping that separates the lining from the fabric of the jacket. We also offer monograms on custom shirts, and something sweet that people do is get their wedding date embroidered on their cuffs. Some folks will opt for a traditional tux, but will mix it up with bright colors (rather than classic black or blue) or will add a velvet jacket. A lot of clients bring in fabric from their family member’s wedding dress or a loved one’s handkerchief and ask that we sew it into their jacket as a tribute—that’s my favorite way to add a personal touch. A modern, fanciful wedding day is just a pop of pink away.
SEND SOME SHINE Iridescents are very now—use ’em on your invite or save-the-date for a playful, of-themoment metallic hit.
There’s throwing a party—and then there’s throwing a party. And if the latter is your goal, then you just may want to consider letting this electric mood dictate your day. An energetic combo of saturated color, neon lights and loads of glitter, manic pixie daydream caters to the wild child in us all. Feel like your scene? Start with a bright palette of violet, fuchsia, teal and yellow, then add holographic touches and tons of playful details, like a DIY cotton candy dessert bar or surprise laser-enhanced dance-off to end the night. Party on, lovebirds.

MARRIAGE

Build a marriage that’s as beautiful as your wedding with smart advice from our friends behind the science-backed relationship app, Lasting. B Y A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O
PERCENT
To set yourselves up for the greatest chance of success, begin convos in a gentle manner, especially if they’re around an emotionally charged topic like money or each other’s family. Focus on how you’re feeling and what you need from your partner. Use a kind tone and sit down to chat so you can both focus your attention on the issue at hand. Try kicking it off with this: I feel ___________ when ___________ happens. I need ___________ from you.
NEWS FLASH: YOUR PARTNER CANNOT READ YOUR MIND. SORRY. The human desire to be “known” can often lead to the assumption that your partner can read your mind. Um, nope. Research shows that direct communication around both your needs (also known as emotional calls) is the key to a successful relationship. Literally, ask for what you need so your partner can acknowledge and meet that need. It’s that easy.
conflict TKM19FALL_STYPLAN_Marriage.L [P].indd 132
THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO VALID REALITIES AT PLAY DURING A DISAGREEMENT. It’s easy to get caught up in a win-lose battle when it comes to arguments—naturally, you want to convince your partner of your viewpoint and win them over. But don’t overlook the fact that you’re on the same team and both of your opinions are valid. Focus on understanding their take on reality—you don’t have to agree, but try to find at least one part of it to validate.
OUR BRAINS ARE GOOD AT FORMING EXPECTATIONS FOR THE FUTURE BUT BAD AT KNOWING WHAT WILL REALLY MAKE US HAPPY You probably have expectations about what marriage will be like—trust us, we’ve been there. But putting that kind of pressure on your future can be a fast track to unhappiness. Instead, create healthy (and realistic) expectations for your marriage by talking through your dreams, visions and goals for the future with your partner from the start.
Ah, the C word. When handled correctly, it can actually strengthen your marriage. When two people partner up, they often neglect their own beliefs to “keep the peace.” But instead of going away, these beliefs surface as conflict. During a fight, try to understand your partner’s story beneath their argument.

Sure, those things can play a role, but they are not directly linked to A++ intimacy. Research instead touts two main factors: maintaining a strong emotional connection (that closeness will spill over into your sex life) and having conversations around your sexual preferences, which builds trust and satisfaction.

OF DIVORCES ARE CAUSED BY MONEY I$$UES
{
No matter how similar you may seem on paper, you and your partner have two completely unique inner worlds. Translation: You both boast distinct views, beliefs, dreams, interests, and ways of thinking and feeling. People in successful marriages make it a priority to continually grow in their knowledge and understanding of their partner’s inner world. Keep asking your partner questions and expressing a curiosity toward them. Allow room in your marriage for both of you to grow and change.
At some point, curiosity decreases and you can become complacent—it’s easy to assume you know everything about your partner.
YOU MARRY A PERSON— AND THEIR SET OF PROBLEMS. You and your partner will likely fight over the same issues repeatedly. Typically, they’ll focus on differences relating to your personalities or lifestyle choices. Our tip? Learn how to manage those conflicts, not resolve them. This means reaching an understanding about your differences, not a resolution. You’ll grow in empathy and emotional connection while respecting your differences.
69%{

NEVER ALWAYS WHEN USED DURING FIGHTS, THESE WORDS ARE HARMFUL
Let’s be honest: Disagreements are inevitable. And although it can be tempting to pull out the “You never...” or “You always...” in a heated argument, those phrases are not actually factual or helpful. Furthermore, they’ll likely put your partner immediately on the defensive, because the argument is no longer about the current incident but instead about their character. You’re essentially saying to them that they can’t get it right and will never change. Yikes. Decide together to make “never” and “always” off-limits in arguments. You’ll both be better off for it.

WHAT WAS YOUR DRESS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE LIKE? I went dress shopping with my sister when she was engaged last year. She landed on a gorgeous Watters gown. I loved her dress, but I saw the other options that were available and I wasn’t impressed. I realized I had to go to the custom route to get the style I wanted, because every other dress in my size would hide the things I wanted to accentuate. I’d worked with Watters on a photo shoot before, and Xay (the creative director) and I hit it off. She’s amazing and she gets my vision. I told them when I shot with them, “I’m coming to you when I get engaged.” And here we are. ACCEPT A lot of brides go into dress YOURSELF AS shopping expecting a big moment YOU ARE AND where they put on a gown and ENJOY WEDDING PLANNING; everyone cries and applauds. But DON’T MAKE IT if you’re plus size, that may not ABOUT GETTING be your experience. It may take DOWN TO A one, two or even three tries to CERTAIN SIZE . find something you love. You may have to drive further to find a store that carries your size, or you may have to order dresses online. But don’t get discouraged. At the end of the day, it’s about marrying the love of your life.
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO YOU TO DISCUSS INCLUSIVITY? For so long, only one kind of beauty has been represented, but it’s important to see women of all sizes on billboards, on television and in magazines. I never had that when I was younger. I’ve always had broad shoulders and wide hips. I wasn’t able to look up to somebody who had my body type. Growing up, I wanted to see someone I could relate to. A lot of brides tend to make wedding planning about weight loss. All of the sudden it becomes, “I have to lose weight for my day.” And I’m like, listen, your fiancé loves you just the way are. You are the person they want to marry—and that’s super powerful. Accept yourself as you are and enjoy the wedding planning journey; don’t make it about getting down to a certain size. It’s important to be healthy, but it’s also important to love yourself. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE BRIDAL FASHION CHANGE? I wasn’t able to shop at a bridal salon because any dress I would have picked probably didn’t come in my size. In my experience, every plus-size wedding dress looks like it was made to cover up or disguise certain areas of the body. But not all plus-size women want to hide their bodies. I wanted a dress that was formfitting; I wanted to feel sexy. I’d love to see more of those kinds of options available for women of every size. I’d also love to change the way plus-size women are treated when they go into a bridal salon. It can be so disappointing to go dress shopping only to realize the store doesn’t have even one dress that will zip up.
I think the way brides are talked to is also very important. It could be as easy as a consultant saying, “You’re beautiful as you are. Let’s work together to figure this out.”
Q:
WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO FEELING CONFIDENT IN YOUR OWN SKIN? Self-love is all about getting into the right headspace. Look at yourself in the mirror and say, “Regardless of what happens today, I am beautiful. My partner wants to be with me for the rest of my life. I am worthy. I am enough.”

GABI FRESH
THE VISIONARY
Influencer Gabrielle Gregg’s new lingerie collab with Playful Promises is unapologetically fire.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A BRA IF YOU HAVE A L A R G E R C U P S I Z E ? It depends on the individual, but I look for underwire because I prefer a little more support. I also love molded cups for added lift. It’s not for everyone—some women love unstructured bralettes, but this is what works for me. Beyond that, it’s just about choosing design details you love. I go for bras that feel different and special. Sometimes they’re novelty pieces, or have design details
that I can’t easily find elsewhere. So much of what’s available in my size is in basic beige or black, which is fine for everyday wear, but when I want to feel sexy and dress up and wear pretty lace and sets with fun details, I always struggle to find pieces that fit me. This is why I decided to partner with Playful Promises. WHAT DESIGN DETAILS ARE YOU LOVING RIGHT NOW? I have a really pretty floralprinted mesh bra and panties set in my new collection that I’m really excited about. I’ve seen a lot of mesh and a lot of printed fabrics, but it felt fresh to combine the two. ARE THERE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HOW PLUS WOMEN S H O P F O R L I N G E R I E ? Yes. The biggest misconception is that we don’t want to buy specialty items and would rather stick to boring stuff. And I think that mentality crosses over into fashion as well. We are still fighting the stereotype that plus women don’t want stylish things because we want to hide ourselves and our bodies. I love approaching lingerie with a body-positive
14 IINN

attitude because you can feel totally sexy in your body at any size, and beautifully designed pieces can help you achieve that feeling. I’m all about flipping the script and having fun with fashion and lingerie. I have cool colors like neon green and orange in my collection to push back against what plus women are told they have to wear. HOW CAN LINGERIE NEWBIES S H O P A D V E N T U R O U S L Y ? If you’re new to lingerie and you’re feeling nervous, start with fun bodysuits. You can wear them under jeans, with a blazer, and experiment in a way that feels more fashionforward than over-the-top. There are also sexy pieces out there that have a little bit

more coverage, like highwaisted bottoms and more modest bras, if that’s what you’re concerned about. You don’t have to immediately go to the most extreme lingerie that you can find. Not to be cliché, but I really do believe that confidence is the best thing you can wear. So whatever makes you feel comfortable, will also make you feel sexy. If edgier stuff isn’t for you and you’d rather wear a pretty lace set, that’s great too. ANY TIPS FOR CHOOSING PIECES FOR YOUR WEDDING N I G H T I N P A R T I C U L A R ? Just have fun with it and express yourself. And also realize that wearing gorgeous lingerie doesn’t necessarily require a special occasion. It’s amazing to dress up for your partner, but it’s also amazing to dress up for yourself if it makes you feel good. Sometimes when I’m feeling low, I hang out in my lingerie all day and dance around the house and in front of the mirror. It lifts me up!

BRIDESMAID TIPS The body-positive activist behind the #MakeMySize movement on how to dress attendants of various body types.
1 BE FLEXIBLE Your bridal party vision doesn’t have to be rigid. Everyone in your crew doesn’t need to fit into the exact same forestgreen, one-shoulder gown. Your wedding day should be about celebrating love and spending time with people you love, so don’t get caught up in little details like forcing your friends to wear identical dresses. Be willing to have an honest conversation if something isn’t working and change things up.

Don’t choose dresses from brands that don’t carry plus if your bridesmaids aren’t straight size. It’s not fair to ask someone to buy a dress that’s too small and try to get it tailored.

THE GAME CHANGERS We chatted with the founders of Ella & Oak, Christine Callahan and Samantha Brody, to get the deets on how the online platform is revolutionizing dress shopping for plus brides.
Q:
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE ELLA & OAK?
Christine: We believe every bride deserves the dress of her dreams. There have been strides toward size inclusivity in recent years, but bridal is still behind. I actually had a terrible dress shopping experience. I was living in a remote location, I felt so much pressure at my local bridal salon and there weren’t quality options for me to try on at home. I also had close friends trying to find dresses as plus-size women, and they were always treated as an afterthought. That was when the light went on and we realized there was a need for an online experience offering amazing, size-inclusive dresses.
PUT COMFORT FIRST
LADY IN RED Acacia lace bra, $49, Acacia lace briefs, $26, PlayfulPromises.com
Don’t try to squeeze everyone into the same silhouette if it’s not working. Your goal should be that no one even has to wear shapewear.
Pick a color and have your bridesmaids pick a dress they love. That way, everyone looks cohesive and is happy.

CHILL OUT SUITED UP Ali lace and mesh bodysuit, $72, PlayfulPromises.com
Just because you want to take a fashion risk doesn’t mean your friends do. If your bridesmaids aren’t super edgy, don’t ask them to wear styles they would normally avoid.
WALK US THROUGH HOW ELLA & OAK WORKS. Samantha: It’s a really simple process. Brides can go online and choose up to three dresses they want to try on at home. We ship them samples of the styles they select along with clips and measuring tape. They have three days to try on before they have to ship the samples back. During the try-on, we also offer a consultation. If a bride wants to call, text or Skype, we’re available to answer questions and talk customization options. Then, we place the final order for her with the designer.
Q: FLOWER POWER Nemi floral bra, $39, Nemi floral briefs, $26, PlayfulPromises.com
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD BRIDES START SHOPPING? Samantha: Our dresses take 12 to 18 weeks to produce. We recommend brides start shopping around 6 to 10 months before their wedding date to make sure they have enough time to try on samples and have their dress made to order. There are options to rush
Q:
DO YOU HAVE GENERAL DRESS SHOPPING TIPS? Christine: Put on a little makeup and wear your wedding shoes (if you have them) so you can get a feel for what your dress will actually look like on your day. And surround yourself with supportive people who will help you make the right decision. If you want your girlfriends to come over and watch you try on, grab some food and champagne and just have a good time with it. This experience should be how you want it.

delivery, but it’s a good idea to shop early to make sure they get their dress in time.
WHAT DO YOU WANT BRIDES TO GET OUT OF THIS EXPERIENCE?
Christine: Size inclusivity is our core value as a brand. We want our brides to know that they have beautiful bodies and we have lots of options that will work for them. We also never ever want them to feel pressured to buy something they don’t totally love or try things on in front of others if it makes them feel uncomfortable. We want them to feel confident and excited about how they shop and what they end up choosing.

WHAT ABOUT A SEMI-FORMAL WEDDING? For a less formal wedding, wear an outfit you can dress up or down with different accessories. A floral dress can be paired with flat sandals or strapless heels, or go for separates like a silk wide-leg trouser and blouse.
AND A CASUAL WEDDING? A more relaxed wedding is still a very special occasion, so opt for a sundress that feels polished. Tanya Taylor’s are always perfect.
IS THERE ONE FASHION RULE EVERY WEDDING GUEST SHOULD FOLLOW? Aside from not wearing white, I would say the most important rule is to wear what you feel comfortable celebrating in! Ditch uncomfortable shapewear and sky-high heels; find something that fits well, including shoes you can dance in.
ANY MYTHS ABOUT DRESSING A PLUS-SIZE BODY WOMEN SHOULD IGNORE? Do all the “don’ts!” Wear bright colors and fitted silhouettes, and don’t hide yourself in dark, oversize clothes. Fit is everything, for any body size. Make sure you’re buying the correct size, tailor your clothes for perfect fit, and embrace your shape at whatever size you are today.

VINTAGE VIBES Art-deco embroidery takes a cue from the era, but with a modern silhouette. The perfect way to round out the look? A soft wave and an opulent hair clip to play up the vintage-inspired aesthetic. Speaking of ideal pairings, this navy high-neck gown has a similarly sophisticated feel. CL ASSICALLY CHIC Sometimes less is more. A sleek, simple gown in matte crepe allows your natural beauty to take center stage. For the bridesmaids and groomsmen, don’t be afraid to mix and match: Have the guys don different shades of gray and let your friends pick the silhouette they like best—united by a single color like dusty lilac.

ROMANTIC RENDEZVOUS The floral embroidery on this airy gown makes it a natural fit for a garden or outdoor setting. Delicate beading takes the detail to an ultra-lush level, while a deep V-neck keeps the look from skewing too sweet. On your forever dance partner: a dashing dark gray tux.

STATIONERY Evergreen envelopes added a winter-inspired pop of color to the invitations. VENUE The couple said their vows at Long View Gallery near Logan Circle. “We loved that the space was a blank canvas,” Sophie says. DESSERT To honor Sophie’s French roots, the pair opted for a croquembouche over cake. DANCING “We’ve attended many Nigerian celebrations together and always hit the dance floor,” Sophie says. “It was important to play Nigerian music.” As a reward for their moves, guests showered the newlyweds with money in customary Nigerian fashion. CEREMONY Sophie and Ataefiok said their vows in front of their own art piece, a literal blank canvas decorated with greenery and candles. WEDDING PARTY Sophie asked her best friends to wear gold and black dresses.
t first, Sophie Penichet (30 and a general manager at Hotel Hive) and Ataefiok Etukeren (31 and an attorney) didn’t seem to have much in common. “We were an unexpected pair,” Sophie says. “My early mornings, your late nights.” Eventually, though, “we discovered shared connections to family and friends and mutual ties to different cultures.” After seven years together and a Parisian engagement, the couple planned an eclectic wedding full of tributes to their different backgrounds, from a West African rehearsal dinner in honor of Ataefiok’s Nigerian heritage to French vows that Ataefiok recited after weeks of lessons as a promise to Sophie’s mom. The couple ended the night with a dance (lift included!) to a crowd-favorite from their Georgetown days, Toto’s “Africa.” — LO U I S BAR AGO NA

#MAKETRADITION With six weeks left until their wedding day, Sophie and Ataefiok decided to switch up their place settings by adding Polaroids of themselves with each guest to the menus. “I’m known as a serial photographer and really wanted those memories to touch our day,” Sophie says. “It was a journey to find 95 different photos of us, but in the end, it was a fun, meaningful way to go down memory lane.”
My favorite moment was seeing our guests as they found their pictures at their seats, it was such a surprise. Everyone was exchanging them and laughing and afterward, some got theirs framed. -Sophie

ierra Duro (23 and a San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Cultural Resource Outreach Specialist) and Anthony Baguyo (26 and a student) have a soft spot for Hawaii, having grown up traveling there to visit family on Maui and Oahu, respectively. When planning their weekend-long wedding, they aimed to showcase the island in an authentic way. “We did not want a luau theme,” Sierra says. “We hoped to capture the existing beauty, not take away from it, by using natural elements rather than decorations.” Blending their heritages—Sierra is Native American and Anthony is Filipino— into the festivities added an even more genuine touch. “After my dad sang our tribe’s ‘creation song’ at the reception, my family then participated in ‘bird songs,’” Sierra says. “It was a magical moment because my culture is very important to me.” — B EC K Y M U R R AY

#MAKETRADITION Sierra is part of the Serrano people—in particular, the Yuhaviatam clan known as “People of The Pines”—while Anthony is Filipino. The pair combined symbols from their two cultures, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’s tribal seal for Sierra and the sun pictured on the Flag of the Philippines for Anthony, to create a custom laser cut design for their stationery and other day-of elements.

Because the laser cut design was so special to us, we wanted to turn it into a gift for our guests. We made Christmas ornaments that doubled as escort cards for everyone to take home. -Sierra

BRIDESMAIDS “Once I knew I was wearing red, I liked the idea of putting my bridesmaids in white for a twist on tradition,” Caitlin says. INSTALLATION Patrick Dougherty’s Out of the Box on show at the North Carolina Museum of Art made for a dramatic and on-theme backdrop. EXIT The couple’s planner organized a surprise glow stick send-off. MENU Guests sampled passed hors d’oeuvres including buttermilk blue cheese and bacon pops, then sat down for surf and turf. CAKE “We wanted a design that could earn its place among the art in the museum,” JT says. The bottom tier’s vivid geometric design softened into a pastel shade, creating an ombré effect. STATIONERY “Our graphic designer’s minimalist style took our weird ideas and turned them into art,” JT says.
aitlin Russell (31 and a director of communications at Citrix) and JT Moore (34 and a senior manager of digital strategy at Bandwith.com) have the Twitterverse to thank for their unexpected meet-cute. A mutual friend and follower connected the Raleigh residents after reading tweets that they were looking to carpool to a concert about an hour away. Their willingness to embrace the unconventional (after all, they agreed to ride with a total stranger) matched their wedding planning mantra. “ ‘Traditional with a twist’ ruled the day,” Caitlin says. JT adds, “The wedding had callbacks to tradition, but then it’d take a zig or zag to bring something that our guests likely hadn’t seen before.” What Caitlin calls a “hodgepodge of colors” and a host of exotic flowers created an artsy atmosphere worthy of its museum setting. — B M

CEREMONY Hajir and Omar tied the knot with a Middle Eastern cultural ceremony called a sofreh aghd, as well as a Muslim ceremony. SYMBOLISM Each item on the ceremonial spread held meaning, including the brightly colored, handmade eggs, which represent hope, the future and fertility. FLOWERS Anemones, dahlias and Queen Anne’s lace in deep shades of burgundy and purple topped tables. MOCKTAILS Partygoers sipped sparkling elderflower lemonade and a pomegranate, lime and mint sparkler, a popular Middle Eastern flavor combination. GUESTS Loved ones traveled from as far as Barcelona and the Middle East to attend the couple’s wedding. STATIONERY Hajir designed all of the day’s paper goods, including illustrating the couple’s framed portrait.
mar Hammad (35 and an environmental engineer) first spotted Hajir Alttahir (32 and an architect and urban designer) sketching an idea for a project at an event. Years later, Hajir took on a new project: their wedding. “We wanted everything to reflect our shared Middle Eastern heritage as well as our American and British backgrounds,” Hajir says. “The garden spaces of Moroccan courtyards and the English countryside were heavy influences for our décor.” The couple added romantic notes to their industrial venue with rich jewel tones, mixed patterns inspired by international travels and nods to their Arab roots, including sending guests home with pomegranate favors and full bellies. “It’s part of our culture that you feed everyone so much they happily waddle home,” Hajir says. — LB

#MAKETRADITION Hajir worked with her dress designer to create a custom beaded overlay as a topper for her blush-colored silk dress, embroidered with different lyrics and phrases significant to her and Omar’s relationship. “The dress contained secret messages,” Hajir says. For his part, “I kept looking at the dress,” Omar says. “There were a lot of words from songs and performances we’ve been to.”
There were so many symbols: bees in honor of a private joke between us, jasmine, ferns and ‘why not?,’ which was my reply to the proposal and a phrase that has come to mean a lot to us. -Hajir

GUEST BOOK Clay and Mike asked partygoers to wish them well by writing on vintage postcards, which inspired the day’s design. MENUS Turquoise paper topped bright yellow linens at the reception. DÉCOR The couple filled the outdoor venue with mid-century modern touches, from Eames chairs to cacti. ESCORT CARD DISPLAY Guests found their seats with the help of colorful cards, which echoed the invites and menus. FASHION Mike opted for a solid deep blue suit, while Clay chose a lighter blue look with a windowpane pattern. RINGS The couple’s Tiffany bands blended both rose gold and platinum as a reflection of their different tastes. SIGNAGE After the wedding, the couple kept their four-foot-tall custom letters. “We’ll be breaking those out at future parties,” Clay says.
layton (Clay) Early (36 and an actor) and Michael (Mike) Dailey (36 and an attorney) wanted their wedding to celebrate one sentiment: Good things take time. What Clay calls their “classic modern romance” began on OkCupid after plenty of bad first dates. Their meeting at a Brooklyn bar proved that it was all worth the wait. “I was instantly charmed,” Clay says. After a proposal in Rome, the couple waited two more years to secure their venue: Colony 29 in Palm Springs, which they filled with bright, ’60s-inspired details. “Our wedding was a chance to throw a house party, but even bigger and more fun,” Clay says. The ceremony also reminded them of the importance of change and time, including acknowledging “the adversity of the LGBTQ community,” Clay says. “We reflected on our past, present and future.” — LB

#MAKETRADITION As an engagement present, a friend gifted Clay and Mike their very own pair of Lego grooms. Because the company doesn’t create sets of grooms, it took a bit of DIY magic. The gifter bought two separate sets of brides and grooms, combined the boys and reworked the packaging, cutting out different parts, so it would appear as though the toys were made with grooms in mind.

A GUIDE TO DRESS SILHOUETTES
Ball Gown
A-line
Mermaid
Perfect for the bride looking to make a statement, there’s nothing subtle about a ball gown. This classic silhouette has a fitted bodice and a voluminous full skirt.
This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a skirt that flares out in—you guessed it—an A shape. Consider it a halfway point between a sheath and a ball gown.
Va-va-voom. This sultry silhouette has a fitted bodice, waist and hips, and dramatically flares out at the knee. It’s a great option if you want to show off your curves.
Trumpet
Sheath
This slim silhouette A toned-down version skims over the body, of the mermaid, the falling straight to skirt of this gown flares the floor below the out just below the hips, hips. What a sheath creating a semi-full dress lacks in volume, shape (like the bell it makes up for in of a trumpet) without versatility—it works with nearly every fabric. any extra volume.
Empire A dress for the Grecian goddess in us all, the empire style has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance that lengthens the body.
S H O P E A R L Y A designer wedding gown will take months to create and a series of alterations to fit your body perfectly. In other words, it’s not the kind of garment you can toss into an online shopping cart and have show up on your doorstep two days later. Book your first appointment 9 to 12 months before your wedding date. If you’re shopping closer to your wedding, you may be limited to samples or off-the-rack gowns. A L W A Y S B O O K A N A P P O I N T M E N T Scheduling an appointment is the only way to ensure you’ll get a full hour of undivided attention. If you’re the type who hates feeling rushed when shopping, make an appointment on a slow weekday morning or afternoon. L I M I T Y O U R E N T O U R A G E Bringing a big group to the salon is a gown shopping don’t. Enlist one or two of your closest friends or family members to help you start your search. This way you can find the gown that best suits your style and not feel pressured by too many opinions.
H I D D E N C O S T S A D D U P Remember, your wedding gown budget doesn’t just include the dress. Your veil or headpiece, accessories, undergarments and alterations will also add to your bottom line. Factor in these costs before you give the salesperson your shopping budget. T R U S T I S K E Y Even if a gown doesn’t look amazing on the hanger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look amazing on you. Be open to what an experienced consultant thinks will work for your body (after all, they’ve done this before). Bottom line: The dress you end up loving might be different than what you originally pictured, and that’s okay. S A L O N S C A N S O M E T I M E S T A K E R E Q U E S T S Just because a bridal salon carries your favorite designer, doesn’t mean it’ll have the exact wedding dress you’ve been wanting to try on. But, if you phone in advance and ask about a specific style, your consultant may be able to request a loaner sample of that gown especially for you.

3 The biggest eyefuls of coral are off Andros (home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, with 140 miles of coral and cathedral-like caves), Bimini (where you can also find dolphins and sea turtles), Eleuthera/Harbour Island and the Exuma Islands.
Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 4
5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse duty-free bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.
Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 6
7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera.
Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 9
10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane ride from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike.

BARBADOS 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84 and 88 degrees.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast.
Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 7
8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’tmiss Creole restaurant.
If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.
Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Streetside music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

Historic sites like the Basilica di Santa Croce and Piazza Sant’Oronzo are complemented by modern boutiques, like IJO’ design and Tonda Design, as well as some of Italy’s top eateries, including 3 Rane. W H E N TO V I S I T In south Puglia, you get perfect beach weather from April to November. January and February tend to be cold and rainy, and August can be a bit overcrowded. W H E R E TO S TAY La Fiermontina Urban Resort, a restored 17th-century villa in the heart of the city, offers 16 rooms in a central location, plus lovely grounds that include an olive-tree-shaded pool and Insta-worthy sculpture garden. (From $560; LaFiermontina.com) W H AT TO D O The family behind La Fiermontina Urban Resort opened the nearby M.A.M.A. (Modern Art Museum Antonia) Museum last June to house its private art collection. The hotel can arrange guided tours, followed by a traditional Apulian dinner paired with regional wines.

S P E C I A L I S T P I C K Luxury travel designer John Clifford, president of International Travel Management, (john@internationaltravelmanagement .com) sends art-obsessed clients to Japan’s Setouchi Region. “The islands of Naoshima, Omishima, Inujima and Teshima in the Seto Inland Sea are the epicenters of three decades worth of contemporary art,” he says, “much of which are large-scale outdoor masterpieces.”

LAST LOOK
A wedding is the one day couples don’t usually take fashion risks, but I wanted my personality to shine through—and to do so with a little flair,” John says. “Because my mom passed away in 2008 from breast cancer, I decided to go with a pink suit. I designed the inside of my jacket to match the ‘love’ lettering on my loafers, which is what my wife Ife’s name means in Yoruba.”
