TITLE: ISOLATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM SELECTED PLANTS OF SOUTH AFRICAN FLORA (HELICHRYSUM AND ASPALATHUS SPECIES) FOR APPLICATION IN THE PREPARATION OF BIOCOMPATIBLE METAL NANOPARTICLES
Mr Akinfenwa’s PhD thesis displayed the right conceptual framework to address the research objectives and sequentially address the stated problems. It interfaced between organic chemistry and nanostructure materials from plants that serve as functional products for drug discovery. Conclusions from the study were scientific and evidence based, using cutting-edge analytical instruments, ranging from isolation methods, evaluation of bioactivities and biosynthesis, and bio-evaluation of silver and gold nanoparticles. The experimental results made novel contributions to knowledge, with three research articles and a review published in high-impact journals.
TITLE: MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF SKULLCAP (SCUTELLARIA LATERIFLORA L) AND BURDOCK (ARCTIUM LAPPA L) CULTIVATED UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS
Using combined fertilizer treatments, Mr Tanga cultivated these herbs to help overcome the challenges associated with the production of secondary metabolites of interest to our herbal markets and pharmaceutical industries.
The study revealed that fertilizer combination positively influenced nutritional content, and enhanced accumulation of secondary metabolites in these species. This work concludes that these species can successfully grow in the Winelands region of the Western Cape province of South Africa. The study will contribute to the country’s development goal for Agenda 2030 for job creation when these results go into commercial cultivation. The findings were presented at two international conferences, with novel contributions to five research articles in accredited journals.

TITLE: THE EFFECT OF A CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP FRAMEWORK ON STRATEGIC MARKETING PLANNING FOR DESTINATION MARKETING ORGANISATIONS IN TSHWANE, SOUTH
AFRICA
Malefane Stephen Monyane’s thesis reports the effect of marketing strategies on a destination-customer relationship framework for a destination marketing organisation. The destination-marketing organisation used as a case study is the Tshwane Tourism Association. He investigated literature based on strategic marketing planning, market positioning, retention marketing, product/service strategy, relationship marketing and customer relationship management. He applied a mixed-method research design. The study population included hospitality, travel and tourism organisations operating within the City of Tshwane as existing and potential customers of the Tshwane Tourism Association, non-governmental organisations operating within the Gauteng province, and higher education institution experts in South Africa. Finally, using the results from the findings and data reported in the literature, he developed a framework for a destination customer relationship programme. These findings will be useful in the future rational design of customer relationship framework and strategic marketing planning for destination marketing organisations.

TITLE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TOURISM MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR THE CONSERVATION OF NATIONAL PARKS IN RWANDA
The study developed a tourism management framework for the conservation of Rwanda’s three national parks by highlighting community capacity building, reporting channels, compensation, local community involvement and participation, as strong variables for effective conservation of the parks. The study also proposed a communication strategy that should be adopted to ensure successful implementation of the developed framework. During the doctorate study, three articles were published in peer review journals; while three more articles were presented at international conferences, and were published in extended abstract books.

TITLE: THE MARKET LIQUIDITY OF DESIGNATED 2B EQUITY SECURITIES UNDER THE BASEL ACCORD: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM SOUTH AFRICAN COMMERCIAL BANKS
Samuel Enow’s thesis evaluated the market liquidity of level 2B common equity in the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) and Net Stable Fund Ratio (NSFR). His study improves on the frontier of knowledge regarding liquidity management, particularly financial market liquidity by empirically investigating the state of the level 2B common equity securities as proposed in the Basel III reform for liquidity management. In his dissertation, two modified liquidity ratios were proposed to integrate systemic risk which captures illiquidity premiums. These modified ratios are a notable advancement of the existing LCR and NSFR, which can be relied on in periods of stress. Samuel has published one article from his dissertation in the Academy of Accounting and Financial Studies Journal, which is DHET accredited. He presented his dissertation in the 42nd International Centre of Economics, Humanities and Management, Paris, France, 26–28 September 2022, and was awarded best presenter. Samuel has submitted two other manuscripts for possible publication in DHET accredited journals.

TITLE: FRAMEWORK FOR CRITICAL THINKING AMONG INTERNAL AUDITING STUDENTS USING TECHNOLOGY-BASED EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS
The fundamental purpose of Ikenna Eze’s study was to construct a conceptual framework that would guide teachers in addressing the growing demand for auditors with strong critical thinking skills. This was achieved by first using the viewpoints of three groups of respondents consisting of ten respondents; and secondly, using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) design to confirm the concepts and relationships provided in the literature-based provisional framework and to provide insight into further concepts and their connections. The result is an innovative, integrative, and rigorous conceptual framework that will assist educators in developing critical thinking, not just in auditing students using technology-based instructional interventions. The intricate complexity of critical thinking development is given structure by this framework. The development of critical thinking skills, on the other hand, is not a once-off linear process. As a result, the framework, and its various concepts and linkages, should be viewed as part of an ongoing process of critical thinking development. Ikenna has published a number of publications from this thesis, and much more is expected in the future.

TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE USE OF M-COMMERCE BY BRICK-ANDMORTAR RETAIL STORES IN ANGOLA
Mateus Justino’s thesis focused on the linkage between m-commerce technology and brick-and-mortar retail stores. The study used both the Technology-OrganisationEnvironment (TOE) framework and the Task-Technology Fit (TTF) models as theoretical lenses to understand and interpret how brick-and-mortar businesses adopt and use new technologies for their commerce activities. The report sheds light on m-commerce as a viable solution for retail SMEs in the contemporary market. The study offers sufficient theoretical grounds for explaining and understanding the retail trade in using digitalised mobile systems. The clarion call is for brick-and-mortar retail SMEs to adopt and use m-commerce for effective participation in the digital commerce ecosystem to manage the business stakeholders’ priorities, and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. This study proposes a general framework to align brick-and-mortar retail operations and m-commerce practices to assist technologically challenged retail SMEs to deal with the complications associated with m-commerce adoption and usage.

TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT
Lance Barbier’s thesis explores the relationship between public administration, knowledge management, and service delivery in the South African government. The study defines “Knowledge Management” as the practice of ensuring correct information is used effectively to provide maximum value. In the South African context, this study confirms that improved Knowledge Management will improve service delivery, a key objective of this government, as outlined in Section 195 of Chapter 10 of the South African Constitution. Lance has developed a Knowledge Management Implementation Framework, which he believes will meet this objective. Overall, the study reveals that when Knowledge Management is implemented correctly, it has the potential to bridge the divide between public officials’ knowledge and their output, thereby improving service delivery. Lance recommends that policymakers fast-track service delivery improvement by leveraging Knowledge Management. Lance has published two articles in accredited international journals, and another three are awaiting publication.

TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR EMBEDDING CITIZEN-CENTRIC SERVICE DELIVERY IN A SELECTED DEPARTMENT IN THE WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT
Yasien Ryklief’s thesis focused on creating and implementing effective training and development interventions to ensure citizen-centric service delivery in post-democracy South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape. These interventions are essential to strengthen communities’ technical capabilities, and contribute to the comprehensive development of public service personnel’s skills in public engagement and citizencentric service delivery. The study sought to determine if training and development opportunities were driven by the need to enhance employees’ abilities to achieve and deliver their department’s service delivery mandates. The results of the study indicated that shifting government’s focus to citizen centricity would indeed improve efficiency and service delivery. Yasien published an article in the International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science titled: “The importance of training and development for government officials in South Africa”. According to Research Gate, the interest score of Yasien’s article is higher than 89% of research items published in 2022.

TITLE: CRITICAL EVALUATION OF SERVICE DELIVERY IN SELECTED SOUTH AFRICAN MUNICIPALITIES: THE ROLE OF BUDGET MANAGEMENT
Mr Zweni’s thesis focused on advancing our understanding of the difficulties experienced by municipal officials, and developing a framework to guide the management and employees of municipalities in their budget management. The study revealed that risk management, cash flow management, revenue and expenditure management, legislative considerations, and budget planning have a significant impact on effective budget management. The study developed a framework using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to determine the model’s fit indices and to test the significance of relationships between key variables. The framework provides new insights into the challenges of public management, as well as providing a useful practical guide to effective budget management in the municipalities where the study was conducted. Ultimately, the application of the Zweni framework has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life of South African citizens. Abongile published four DHET accredited articles in both national and international journals in the field of public management. Two of his manuscripts have been submitted to accredited international journals for possible publication. His work has also been presented at two internal conferences on public administration.

TITLE: POST-MORTEM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IN THE ASSESSMENT OF FATAL CHILD
ABUSE
The study compared cross-sectional post-mortem Computed Tomography (PMCT) imaging to the forensic autopsy (FA) for the assessment of injuries sustained in children with suspected fatal child abuse or sudden unexplained deaths. This research demonstrated the value of PMCT for diagnosing additional injuries and congenital abnormalities not readily seen during FA. Thus, PMCT supported the FA in reaching a comprehensive assessment of internal injuries sustained. The study filled a gap in research conducted in this area on the African continent. One important recommendation made, is that PMCT should be a routinely employed supplementary examination to the FA in children with fatal injuries.
