TITLE: FERRIC PRECIPITATION AND METAL SORPTION IN BIOHYDROMETALLURGICAL PROCESSES

Acidic ferric ion is critical for the extraction of metal during bioleaching of sulphide ores, however, the bioleaching efficiency is limited due to the sorption of desired metals by unavoidable iron (ferric) precipitate. Babatunde Oladipo’s doctoral thesis investigated the effect of solution conditions on the surface properties of iron precipitate, generated in a typical biohydrometallurgical process. He unravelled mechanistically the form of interaction that exists between the sorbed desired metal and the precipitate. He established that while the sorption kinetics can be described accurately by the pseudosecond order rate model, the sorption mechanism is chemisorption and was initiated by ion exchange. The findings from his thesis may be applied in bioleach operations not only to manage iron precipitate, but it may also improve desired metal recovery from such operation, thereby improving the economics of the process in the mining industry. The thesis formed the basis of his international journal publication. It was also presented at International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium – the only scientific meeting in his field of biohydrometallurgy – in Perth, Australia, November 2023.

TITLE: A CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY MODEL TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PERFORMANCE OF SMES IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Lance Wentzel’s research utilised partial least square structural equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to develop a novel corporate social responsibility (CSR) model for the achievement of sustainable business performance of SMEs in the South African construction industry. The research revealed specific CSR perceptions; CSR drivers, and CSR implementation challenges, all of which have substantial predictive capabilities to influence CSR activities considered by SMEs to achieve sustainable business performance. Some of the work has been published in a journal article, and the remainder has been submitted for publication.

TITLE: OPTIMAL DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF A SOLAR BIFACIAL PV-WINDSPLIT GENSET HYBRID POWER SYSTEM

Ibukun D Fajuke developed a model for the optimisation of hybrid power system consisting of bifacial Photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, battery and split generator set using Giza Pyramid Construction (GPC) optimisation algorithm. The system was modelled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment. His model accurately determined the appropriate component selection of the hybrid system, reduced the life cycle cost of the system, and mitigates the environmental effects of the system in the society. The outcome of his study will not only help to ease the transition from conventional energy generation sources to renewable energy sources, it will also assist researchers, decision makers, government agencies, and energy solution companies to optimally size and analyse the major components of a HPS before they are finally implemented.

TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR FUEL CELL/LITHIUM-ION BATTERY HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Samson Obu Showers developed an energy management system for a fuel cell/ lithium-ion battery hybrid electric vehicle to optimize power distribution. The EMS was designed and developed using optimisation algorithm in a MATLAB/Simulink/ StateFlow environment, and validated in real-time using TYPHOON HIL. His method accurately improved the fuel cell performance, reduced the electrical stress exerted on the fuel cell, increased the productive lifespan of fuel cell and battery, minimised fuel consumption, and increased the electric vehicle travel range, leading to improved performance. The outcome of this research will accelerate fuel cell electric vehicle adoption, assuage travel range anxiety, and provide vital data for researchers.

TITLE: MODELLING AND CONTROLLER DESIGN OF A FLOTATION COLUMN

Ms Tshemese-Mvandaba’s doctoral study addressed the advanced controller design for a multivariable system. Advanced controllers are needed to address the intricate interactions that characterise complex industrial processes. Hence, designing control systems that mitigate the stability issues in these systems is important. The research looked at different innovative control design methods and algorithms which are based on decentralised coupled and decentralised dynamic decoupled closed-loop systems. The developed closed-loop model of the flotation process was implemented in a realtime platform using the TwinCAT automation software and industry standard-based Beckhoff PLC through the model transformation technique. The research deliverables and validation of the concept were achieved, and they apply to the industrial process control, and automation sector, as well as to research, teaching, and training at universities and research centres.

TITLE: AN EXPLORATION OF THE STUDENT-TUTOR INTERACTION IN THE LIVE ONLINE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CRITIQUE

Jolanda De Villiers Morkel explored a prominent architectural studio practice in a synchronous online learning setting. Conversation, Experiential Learning, and Cognitive Apprenticeship theories were employed to investigate critique interactions. Situated in a blended part-time architecture programme in South Africa, this research produced novel insights into the moves, modes, and methods employed when students are guided by tutors, toward acquiring design expertise. The study reveals the formative, iterative, formal, and immersive dimensions of their interactions. In addition to explaining the characteristics of the live online critique and the studenttutor relationships in this setting, it offers a syntax, the Crit Notation Method (CNM), and a Crit Interaction Model (CIM) to guide future post-pandemic design critique practices and research.

TITLE: E-READINESS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN INFORMAL SECTOR FOR ELECTRONIC PORTAL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT

Ernest Etim accessed the e-readiness of the South African informal sector to leverage Web portal technology. Data was collected from 490 respondents within Cape Town Metropole using a survey research design. PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Modelling) was performed on a research model comprising constructs from the three IS Theories (SET, UTAUT, TRI) and internal and external factors of e-readiness.

The findings show that external factors, personal expectations, and beliefs influence e-readiness; whereas gender, type of informal work, and internal factors had no significant influence. The study offered new insights into the e-readiness of the South African informal sector and the benefits of web portal technology adoption.

TITLE: EFFECTIVE UTILISATION OF HUMAN RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN HEALTH SECTOR

Emmanuel Udekwe explored the effectiveness of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) usage in the public health sector of South Africa. Innovation diffusion theory, knowledge-based theory and Technological, Organisational and Environmental (TOE) frameworks were adopted to develop the Managerial, Technological and External (MTE) factors framework for the effective use of HRIS in the South African health sector.

The study found, among others, the lack of skilled health workers’ access and knowledge of HRIS, lack of HRIS upgrades, and lack of funds as major reasons for the ineffective HRIS in the health sector. The study recommends the implementation of the MTE factors framework, including the guidelines for effective workforce management using HRIS.
